Kobe

Fined $100k

'Offensive and Inexcusable'

4/13/2011 6:52 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Kobe Bryant was just fined $100k by the NBA for his homophobic slur at the Lakers game last night.

0413-kobe-technical-tmt-ex-7-credit-1
NBA Commissioner David Stern says, "Kobe Bryant’s comment during last night’s game was offensive and inexcusable. "

He continues, "While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated.  Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000.  Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.”

As we previously reported, Kobe mouthed the words, "f**king f**got" after getting a technical foul during the game.

FYI -- according to Forbes.com, Kobe made an estimated $48 million last year in salary and endorsements.

UPDATE: A rep for the Human Rights Campaign -- an LGBT civil rights organization -- tells TMZ, "We applaud Commissioner Stern and the NBA for not only fining Bryant but for recognizing that slurs and derogatory comments have no place on the basketball court or in society at large."

ILL BE GLAD WHEN HOMOSEXUALS ATTAIN THEIR RIGHTS. MAYBE THEY'LL STOP BEING SO F*****G UPTIGHT AND INTRUSIVE. MAYBE THEY WILL BEGIN TO REALIZE THAT "PEOPLE" ARE JUST "PEOPLE" I FEEL WE WANT HOMOSEXUALS TO STOP ATTEMPTING TO USE EVERY POTENTENTIAL SOCIAL ISSUE AS A RALLYING CRY TO ILLUSTRATE THEIR QUASI EXCLUSION AND DEFAMATION. MOST PEOPLE AREN'T AGAINST YOUR CAUSE, BUT WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO LEGISLATE YOUR ACCEPTANCE INTO MAINSTREAM SOCIETY, YOU ARE THEN INFRINGING UPON THE RIGHTS OF OTHER PEOPLE, WHOM FEEL ITS THEIR "INALIENABLE RIGHT" NOT TO GIVE A F***!

I don't know where this $100k is going to end up but it would be nice if they can just donate this to the victims of the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

gceo7, gay people are uptight? Hahahaha. No, they just aren't your punks. Legislate their acceptance in mainstream society? Gay people are already mainstream. That isn't even close to the issue here. Discrimination is the issue. Homophobia is the issue. And until HETEROSEXUALS LIKE YOU realize it's NOT all about you, the world does NOT revolve around you, and that you CANNOT do whatever you want whenever you want in regard to gay people, you will CONTINUE to see the gay community speaking out. Sorry, but the world isn't the straight paradise you may have believed it was. No-one really cares what you do or don't care about. But if you think you are going to step on the gay communities' toes and not get a reaction, you're wrong. It's that simple. Respect them, they'll respect you.

This is ridiculous. Are you telling me many other NBA players haven't said the same or worse? Kevin Garnett talks so much after he is fouled or dunks on someone. Someone took the time to go through tape and carefully look for Kobe mouthing "***got". The fine doesn't do anything to help the game. This won't stop other players from saying it. It was in the moment speech. Please I don't buy this, it's all political. **** David Stern. I'm sure he's said a few "***got" terms in his life. He should fine himself.

#136: You and your English degree (yeah, I've got one too) are full of it. How one uses words is just as important as the words themselves. Anyone knows that calling someone a "f***ing f****t" in anger is absolutely a homophobic slur. If the ref called Kobe a "f***ing n****r" would that be fine, since language has evolved?

What I would like to know is when did words change their original meaing. Gay used to mean happy and still means happy in some books. Queer used to mean wierd now it's gay. b.i.t.c.h. used to mean female dog and still do but if used the wrong way is a curse. Who decides what words get change. Rainbow was just a group of colors that came after it rained and now it's suppose to be the flag of homosexuals. Who told them they can just claim the rainbow. So people can just adjust themselves to whatever. So ugly now means pretty. Seeing as how things change.

Brasil, anti-gay slurs endanger gay kids, teens and young adults especially who are fragile minded and insecure due to self-hate, caused by societal homophobia. So yes, the f-word does endanger, and it ruins lives.

My man, this isn't about walking on eggshells. It's only about thinking before you speak, and having respect and decency towards others. That's it. Intent v action, two different concepts. Actions are what is being condemned here. We as a world just need to remember the golden rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Additionally, the efficacy of an angrily hurled word is completely dependant on whom you're hurling the word at. There are no set rules of etiquette for expressing anger. Anger, by it's very nature, puts a person in a state of mind where expressing aggressive or insulting words/behavior is the most common outcome. Also, often the most effective insults have to do with referring to someone as something that they are the opposite to, or something they have a sense of disgust/disdain for. It can be as simple as calling a pious person a "devil" or a thin woman a "fatty" or a klansman a "Jew-Lover". In the case of the word "***got" it's just a quick way of calling a heterosexual male a homosexual--but it is equal in effect to calling a heterosexual male a woman. It's not about homosexuals or women being undesirable or disgusting necessarily, but merely implying that someone who is not a homosexual or a woman, who identifies strongly with being heterosexual, isn't. Hell, call a distinguished actor a "hack" and you can get a rise out of them...call a Cuban a Mexican and wait for the WTF look on their face. Call an Aussie a Limey, and wait to get punched in the face. As a heterosexual male, i'd find it amusing, NOT insulting, if Homosexual men used "Hetero!" as an epithet to their gay enemies or in arguments. Is this about the violence of words, or the collective insecurity of the gay community?

Can we stop with the idiotic "free speech" and "First Amendment" comments? That applies to the GOVERNMENT, not a private enterprise like the NBA. It's not the government that's fining Kobe, it's his employer, an agreement he entered into willingly.

Sheesh. Did any of you go to high school?
