Oscar Nominated Director KILLED In Libya

4/20/2011 4:08 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

UPDATE: The Hetherington family just sent a statement saying, "It is with great sadness we learned that our son and brother photographer and filmmaker Tim Hetherington was killed today in Misrata, Libya by a rocket-propelled grenade. Tim will be remembered for his amazing images and Academy Award nominated documentary 'Restrepo' which he co-produced with his friend Sebastian Junger. Tim was in Libya to continue his ongoing multimedia project to highlight humanitarian issues during time of war and conflict. He will be forever missed."

Documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington -- who was nominated for an Oscar for the Afghanistan war movie "Restrepo" -- was killed today while working on a project in Libya.

According to reports, three photogs who were working with Hetherington were also injured in a skirmish between rebels and government forces ... including one man who suffered a critical brain injury.

The group was reportedly hit by a rocket propelled grenade.

Hetherington was reportedly rushed to a hospital with extensive shrapnel wounds -- but he was already dead by the time he arrived.

Hetherington was 41-years-old.

CBS reporter Lara Logan was sexually assaulted in Egypt.
Mr. Hetherington was killed in Misurata and American photographer Chris Hondros suffered a severe brain injury and had to be revived in the same assault. Guy Martin, a Briton, was also seriously injured, and a fourth photographer suffered a shrapnel wound to the shoulder.
Being an embedded journalist or photographer in a conflict zone carries many risks, and these dedicated professionals knew this. It's such a shame, and a huge loss, when they get caught in the crossfires.

Which is why everyone who is not a member of the military NATO forces should leave there. Its incredibly dangerous why would even think of staying! May he rest in peace, I'm praying for his family.

Geez, some of you sound like communists...dictating who should be allowed to be in that country. This guy chose to go there and was passionate about what he was doing...he lived his life the way he wanted. RIP.

Why does our need to know supercede the safety of our journalists and photographers? I don't need to see pictures to know they're barbarians half way around the world.

My condolences to Mr. Hetherington's family. Such a loss.

yes this is really sad...RIP Tim..what a waste of a young life dam wars....I almost want to agree with Beer Belly at this point, let them fight their own battles, it doesnt seem to matter how much we try to help, they just keep having wars over there. I know they are fighting for their independence, but we are losing too many young people over their wars...condolences to his family
