Jimi Hendrix -- The 40 Year Battle for His Music

5/5/2011 5:49 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

When Jimi Hendrix took the stage at London's Royal Albert Hall back in 1969 ... bet he didn't think his family would be in a nasty legal war over the performance 42 years later.

TMZ has obtained a lawsuit, filed by the Hendrix Estate -- in which Jimi's family claims they are the rightful owners of several sound recordings from two concerts at the R.A.H. in 1969 ... despite another cooperation laying claim to the material.

According to the suit, Jimi signed an agreement with the people who recorded the music way back when ... an agreement which would have given them the right to use the music in a motion picture.

But Jimi died ... and the movie was never made ... and for the last 40-years, Jimi's estate and the corporation have been arguing about which side truly owns the rights to the recordings.

Now, the people who run Jimi's estate want to end the battle once and for all ... asking a judge to deem them the rightful owners ... and then force the corporation to pay up more than $2 million in legal costs and other expenses.

... and the wind cried, Mary.

@C. Wilberding

As for the use of cooperation, TMZ could be referring to antagonistic cooperation, "the suppression of minor differences by two or more persons or groups to achieve a major common interest".

Rights to Jimi's RAH performance still has to be determined.

It may be Alan Douglas AKA corporation against Hendrix Estate? Correct...
Alan Douglas managed Jimi at time of death and Alan went on to make a lucrative business for 30 years and/or still in litigation in using the rights Jimi signed off to a trusted manager in good faith.
Personal story: I worked at Electric Lady Studios and we made T-Shirts with Jimi's face in 1991 (for internal/ employee use). Alan Douglas got wind of it, and asks us to remove the image or pay a tremendous fee to keep Jimi's image on the T-Shirt. How ridiculous....

TMZ (The cooperation) needs our corporation on how to proof read posts before they go live. ;)

As long as they disagree, the lawyers get richer and richer. The family should have gotten the money.

They need to settle with the Hendrix family and call it a day. Forty years is too long for any suit. I loved Jimmy and I remember him well. I think Prince got a lot of inspiration from him.

Damn, Jimi's brother should have control. You all are too young to know what the hell your talking about.

Just a side note, but besides being one of the greatest rockers of all time Jimi was also in the army. He was a 'Screamin' Eagle' paratrooper with the legendary 101st Airborne stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The very same place Obama will meet with SEAL Team 6 and the Air Support Wing after their Pakistan Mission later on today. Being part of the 101st was something Jimi had spoken of as a proud aspect of his life.
