Gabe Kaplan

Giving Back SOME

Of His Poker Winnings

8/17/2011 12:20 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0815_gabe_kaplan_EX
"Welcome Back Kotter" star  Gabe Kaplan is forking over almost half his winnings from those Hollywood poker games involving a ponzi crook, Tobey Maguire,  and several other big name celebs.

Kaplan was one of the defendants in the lawsuits filed earlier this year ... by a bankruptcy trustee trying to recover cash convicted ponzi schemer Bradley Ruderman lost in the high-stakes poker tournaments.

According to court documents filed last week -- Kaplan won a total of $62,000 from Ruderman ... but as part of a settlement he's agreeing to return $27,900 to the trustee.

Tobey is fighting the lawsuit against him and has refused to hand over any of his winnings.

Kaplan's proposed settlement was submitted to the judge on Friday, but has not been approved yet.

"...Hollywood poker games involving a ponzi crook, Tobey Maguire, and several other big name celebs."

Tobey Maguire is a ponzi crook?! Harr.

I'd fight it too, but I wonder how it's going to turn out for Tobey. We'll see!

Dumbass! How many of the people that got screwed will ever see a cent? Probably none, that will all go to the legal and court expenses. Get real. The only person at that gaming table who committed a crime was (inso far as we know) Rudderman. Where else did Rudderman spend all that money? Is Delta Airlines giving any back? or was he flying private? Ask ExecuJet for some back... or a hotel, how about the resteraunts or the whores? LMAO

interesting that they report what he won
but no mention of what he had lost over time in the games- which was probably a lot more

Yeah this is a pretty stupid lawsuit and it sucks that out of all of the people he is the one to give back money considering he probably needs it the most out of the group that played.

But I'm figuring he didn't want to battle this out in court and recognized that his legal fees even if he won would be greater than what he settled for. Even though he probably made the smart choice from a financial perspective, I agree that its lame that he should pay any money at all.

None of the players should return so much as a penny. It was a legal game, there are no "do overs" in poker. Ruderman is a grown man who knew what he was doing and played of his won free will. You don't get the money spent on Lotto tickets when you don't win. It's the same thing.

The lawyer is charging how much an hour for his work? How many hours can he get in each week? He should go after some of the staff that worked these rooms because they got some of this cash in tips also. How about the guys that parked there cars, they got some money. He can milk this for years collecting his fees. The people that lost money get nothing.

Why would he return anything? Sorry the ponzi guy was a bad poker player and got caught doing illegal things. Sucks being you. Why should anyone give anything back?

This is the stupidest lawsuit EVER!!!! How can they even be allowed to do this? It's like if someone robs a bank they don't hit up every McDonald's and 7-11 they stopped at to get back the money. Some sleazy lawyer just saw dollar signs and thought he could rip off some celebrities.
