Jeremy Renner

My Puppy Tragically Died

3/14/2012 10:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Jeremy Renners 8-month-old puppy Franklin dropped dead on a baseball field.Jeremy Renner suffered a devastating loss last weekend, after his 8-month-old puppy Franklin dropped dead on a baseball field.

Jeremy's friend and business partner Kristoffer Winters was dogsitting the French bulldog last Saturday in Orange County -- and decided to take it to his nephew's little league baseball game.

We're told the dog was running around the field having fun on a very hot day -- near 80 degrees.  Then, at around 2 PM, the pup began to vomit and convulse. Kris -- who had left to get a snack -- returned to find Jeremy's dog dead in a woman's arms.

We're told 3 people tried to give the dog mouth-to-mouth to revive the pooch -- to no avail.

French bulldogs notoriously suffer from heart problems, which could be exacerbated by heat.

We're told Jeremy and Franklin were EXTREMELY close and he's grief-stricken.

Since when has 80 degrees become "very hot"? I worked at a vet for 6 years and at that temp a dog's life is never in danger with regard to the weather. Dog had to be ill way before this.

Maybe had this celebrity owner been educated and/or responsible enough to know the dangers of heat and Brachycephalic breeds, this tragedy would not have happened. Breed education ultimately lies in the hands of those who choose to breed and place these puppies with the unsuspecting, often times ignorant pet owner. That puppy died a horrible death no doubt and it is probably best that Jeremy partake in a more hardy breed and/or make sure to educate himself and be more responsible in the event he just has to have another French Bulldog. You can obtain all the information needed at the French Bulldog Club of American website.

I have a French Bulldog. You NEVER, NEVER let them play hard out in the hot sun.
Frenchie's are VERY heat intolerent. They can not take heat, PERIOD.
I'm outraged that this beautiful creature died and it could have been prevented !!!

Dont ever leave them in a warm car either, they pant hard, and become dehidrated, very
fast. They must live in cool climate.

I'm surprised they had him out there in that heat. Dogs with short snouts tend to overheat more easily. Poor thing probably couldn't breathe.

My heart goes out to him. Bull dogs and pugs cant take the heat. You cant take them out in that kind of weather for more than 30 mins and have to make sure they drink a ton of water in the hotter days. So sad.

I knew someone who had one of those wonderful little dogs, but it did wheeze a lot when breathing. I wonder if the puppy may have had a respiratory or heart impairment, or simply became dehydrated, much as a human baby can dehydrate quickly. It is so easy to dehydrate even on a day that isn't very warm if the humidity is particularly low, and the puppy was running around too much without stopping for water. Or it could have been something as simple as the puppy being stung by something or stumbling across a discarded bit of food to which it was allergic or which is poisonous to dogs, like chocolate. Not good to have left it unsupervised, anyway, because dognappers will often grab a valuable puppy like that.

So sad.

I bet the ball field lawn had been recently treated with chemicals to make the grass green and "healthy". It would be toxic to all dogs, but puppies especially. Poor baby.

Was the dog getting enough fluids so he was properly hydrated? I always see people at outdoor events with no water for their dogs and the poor things are panting in the heat. I'm not saying that's what happened here but let it be a lesson to pet owners. Always BRING WATER FOR YOUR PETS
