NFL Star Braylon Edwards

Settles Slander Lawsuit

and Donates Money to Charity

EXCLUSIVE

NFL star Braylon Edwards just settled a slander lawsuit that he claimed cost him a $15 million NFL contract -- but he's being magnanimous about it ... and donating his settlement money to charity, TMZ has learned.

The former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver filed a $14 million suit against a Detroit restaurant and several employees for slander and extortion back in 2011... claiming their false accusations about him being involved in a bar fight cost him a HUGE contract deal with an NFL team.

Edwards reached a settlement with everyone involved and dropped his suit last month. Sources close to Edwards tell TMZ he was happy to put an end to the matter because he wants to take this time to focus on football instead. Edwards is currently a free agent.

According to our sources, Edwards took the settlement money and established scholarships for 100 kids.

Perhaps to load up on good karma ... 'cause ya know ... he's technically unemployed.

Good for this guy, but FYI, he's been doing this charity thing for years. Perhaps instead of trying t take a potshot at someone actually doing a good deed, YOU could do some god damned research?! You think??

Considering that blacks are only 13% of the American population, TMZ sure has a lot of stories about blacks these days. You really are becoming the BET of Internet tabloid. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Good for him, but research people he's been doing this for years. It's just another good thing he's done, clearly not a one time thing.

At least in the end it worked in support of the poor and the helpless people. I think it was a brag effort from his end to make such donations. Also this what positive perception is, focusing in his football carrier, why not? He is good with what he does. Soon he will back in the game, I wish him best of luck and god bless.

Doesn't matter what his motives were. Still a classy move, which you could have been a little kinder in reporting.

I believe in give and you shall receive but i'd never donate the whole 15 million.

Instead of donating money to 100 kids, can you donate money to your own child that you haven't supported yet. Edwards should take care of his kid before others. Deadbeat dad!!!!!!

Great story. Congrats Mr. Edwards on both the settlement and donating the proceeds. Class act and very heartening to hear.

IF it's true (which remains to be seen), then I applaude his character. An athelete setting a good example for a change, who woulda thunk it?

Evidence of him not being able to hold onto a football obviously was never presented.
