'Road Trip' Star's Widower

Birth Control Pills Killed Her

... and I'm Suing

4/27/2012 10:10 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

"Road Trip" star Mia Amber Davis -- who famously played the big girl -- was TOO OBESE to have been on birth control pills and died as a result ... this according to her widower, who's suing Mia's doctors.

Mia passed away back in May 2011 as a result of a pulmonary embolism ... one day after undergoing knee surgery.

But in his lawsuit, Mia's widower claims ... in the months before the surgery, Mia's OBGYN prescribed her birth control pills such as Balziva and Zenchent ... "drugs that greatly increase one's risk for a pulmonary embolism, especially when combined with [Mia's] other risk factors."

Mia's widower lists "obesity" as one of Mia's significant risk factors.

Mia's widower claims his wife's doctor SHOULD HAVE suggested condoms or other methods of birth control as an alternative ... because the drugs "greatly increased her risk for a pulmonary embolism and ultimately caused her death."

To make matters worse, Mia's widower claims Mia went to a family practitioner on April 18 to complain about knee pain. The doc allegedly cleared Mia for knee surgery ... despite a number of risk factors, including obesity, hyperlipidemia and the fact she was on Zenchent.

Mia's widower claims the doc "should have advised [Mia] to eliminate some of her other risk factors prior to clearing her for the surgery."

Mia underwent the surgery on May 9 ... and died the next day.

Mia's widower is suing both the OBGYN and the family practitioner for unspecified damages ... claiming, among other things, he should be compensated for the loss of love, companionship and moral support he suffered as a result of his wife's death.

We all get she was obese, but some of the things docs prescribe don't have all the info that doctors should know before pumping out pills for kickbacks. I'm not really saying they are at fault, but for years, they've gotten away with keeping the kickbacks while pharm companies get the fines for all the people who took the pills. And no, doctors should not have cleared her if they thought her obesity was a factor for surgical complications on an elective surgery.

You wait til after your wife dies, and THEN decided to educate yourself by reading the fine print? Sue yourself for causing your wife's death. Ignorance is not an excuse. Any responsible woman knows the risks of birth control pills.

Maybe the doctor should have just suggested leaving the lights on during sex. I would be too busy puking to go through with it.

Women are warned of the risks of taking the pill before they get a prescription.

It could be the 300 lbs of fat around her belly and arteries killed her.

I agree with pretty much everyone here...It was her who was already obese and the doctor was only doing his job, he could have warned her about the side effects, she still took them and well big girl go bye bye. Still, I adore the photo here. They look so happy together ^.^ RIP Mia and to the boyfriend/husband/whoever the widow is, you're only making yourself look bad. Just sayin'

Oh I see, have to come up with a reason so you'll know exactly who to sue and get that money... *sigh* it's always about the money.

Hyperlipidemia is a "fatty liver" not a disease.

What happened to PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Seriously, read the script, do a good search on the meds your taking. If they don't sound safe for you, don't take them. Not only that but taking ANY medication when you're that overweight can have adverse reactions. It sucks that she died, but I think this is more about him getting money than anything else.

Dude, in Canada we have universal healthcare. Everyone pays in and no one is shy to call you on common sense. Your fat, you smoke, you do drugs, you have unprotected sex... you will be told that you KNOW your messing with your health and if you continue well your just an idiot. Not only would he be laughed at right now by the doctors and legal system, but they would have him on the news as guy suing doctors because his wife was a fatso just to humiliate him lol

Birth control is not only used to prevent pregnancy. Its also used to treat reproductive issues such as PCOS and endometriosis. Those diseases also are affected by weight and poor diet. As a husband he could've been more proactive in her physical health and needs. If pregnancy was a concern he is grown. He knows how to use condoms.

And you wonder why our healthcare in this country costs so much. You have idiots who sue for anything trying to make money off of accidents.
