'The Avengers'

Shawarma Sales

5/8/2012 12:40 AM PDT UPDATED: 5/7/2012 4:44 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

You may not have realized it when you were in the theaters this weekend, but "The Avengers" is not a movie ... it's a guerrilla marketing campaign for the shawarma industry!!! We'll explain ...

At the end of the "film," a scene within the credits shows the movie's stars eating lunch at an undisclosed location (not a secret lair or anything, they just didn't say). The meal of choice was shawarma ... a callback to something Robert Downey Jr.'s character had said earlier in the movie.

TMZ spoke with several different fine eating establishments all across Los Angeles ... and they all say sales of shawarma went through the roof this weekend.

At Ro Ro's Chicken -- a famed Lebanese joint in Hollywood -- the manager says shawarma sales jumped 80% in the days after the movie opened. We're told the same thing happened a few years back when a baba ghanouj joke was featured in "You Don't Mess with the Zohan."

And that's the last time we'll mention "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" ever again.

Why do people always copy what is done in a movie? "Sheep". Anyone remember a scene in a movie, called "The Program" where some of the football players all layed down in the middle of the street as cars whizzed by them? Well some braniacs copied that scene and one of them was killed as a result and the scene was pulled from the movie. "Sheep"

I don't recognize the stuff in the picture as shawarma... unless it's considered a 'platter' rather than a sandwich. Shawarma is either carved, like gyros, or kabobs, and rolled in a pita. I've seen gyros platters, where the meat is served like most meats are, with the veggies and pita alongside, so I guess this is also true here.

BB not bb

What is sharma, ground up hamburger shish kebabobbed on a skewer? It sounds like the sound when you spit out a wad of phlegm and it lands on a sidewalk. I don't think it sounds all that great.

Maybe they should have had felafel instead.

Without any doubt what so ever you will see The Avengers get a new hero team mate in Avengers 2 and that hero will be....Spiderman. He's a legacy character-popular and his bratty personality will be a perfect fit. Look in the closing credits of the new Spiderman...He'll get the visit from Nick Fury.

This was the scene Robert Downey referred to at the premier that they had one more scene to shoot for the movie . They had the entire cast in and they looked completely different. Chris Evans "Capt. America" had a buzz cut and beard. They gave him a wig and a facial prosthetic to hide his beard (grown for another movie) which is why Evans as his hands covering his face. They shot this scene right after the premier and chose the best of 6 takes. It was a great ending. Heros relaxing.

Mmmm.... I think I'll head over to Zankow Chicken on Colorado... Speaking of which, here's a fantastic garlic sauce similar to theirs:

Zankou Chicken's Lebanese Garlic Sauce

3 small russet potatoes
1 head garlic (12-14 cloves. It's a LOT. Be afraid.)
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1/2 tablespoon salt
1/2 cup canola oil

1 Peel the potatoes and boil in water until soft. Mash and let cool.

2 Crush and peel a whole head of garlic. Cut into quarters. Place raw garlic in a heavy duty blender with the salt and lemon juice. Pour a light layer of oil onto garlic. Puree the garlic, salt lemon juice on high and begin pouring a slow steady stream of the rest of the oil through the blender's handle hole until everything has mixed.

3 At this point, you'll have extreme garlickiness (new word), which some people like, but for "texturizing" like Zankou's, you'll need the taters.

4 Add the mashed potatoes, about 2-3 tablespoons at a time and mix. Continue adding/blending potato until the sauce is mixed well. At some point in this process, you might consider changing blending vessels. After all this work, my blender was starting to think twice about helping me out.

5 Transfer to a bowl and allow to chill completely in the fridge. After about an hour, the flavors will blend together nicely and the texture will take on that library paste consistency like Zankou's sauce.

Shawarma has been a staple cuisine in Ottawa, ON Canada. It's no mystery that it is by far the capital of Canada, as well as the capital of Shawarma outside of Lebanon.
Even Google agrees:

Actually, there's a sign in the background that says "Shawarma Palace, Voted Best Shawarma in New York" or something to that effect. (back and to the right) -- I didn't see it the first time I saw the movie, but we took my mom for mother's day (she was hyped) and I noticed it then. I was surprised so many people left before the scene played.
