Ryan Lochte

Jeah! Copyright Battle

Looming with Compton Rapper

8/18/2012 5:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0817-ryan_lochte_mc_eihtU.S. Olympic hero Ryan Lochte might have an unexpected speed bump on his way to trademarking the phrase "Jeah!" in the form of 90s rap star MC Eiht, who claims the phrase was his long before it was Lochte's.

Eiht tells TMZ he coined the phrase back in 1988 and is insulted to hear Lochte is trying to claim it as his own now. Eiht tells us, "Why try and trademark something his ass didn’t even create? I am mad that he isn’t giving me proper recognition for taking my saying. He is just disrespectful."

The Compton's Most Wanted rapper tells TMZ he's not so much concerned about the money as he is the "respect and the truth."

Eiht says he plans on sending a cease and desist letter urging Lochte to stop using his phrase.

Lochte's manager tells us, "Ryan has been using JEAH for years," adding, "This is the first I have heard of this claim by MC Eiht."

EVERYONE knows that "jeah" was coined and used incessantly through the nineties by mc eiht. Listen to Menace II Society. Listen to New Jersey Drive soundtrack. Listen to ANYTHING by Mc EIHT. EIHT created "JEAH' before Lochte was even BORN!!!!
EVERYONE older than 35 knows this.

If Ryan would have kept his mouth shut and just file for copyright this wouldn't be such a big deal! But instead he talked about it every chance and got this guy thinking Ryan's going to logo this and make a sh!t load! He just want in $$$ free money!

Yeah I am pretty damn sure that Lochte did not create that word, so I don't believe he should have the rights to claim it as his own by copyrighting it. The term "Jeah" has been used countless times in urban culture. Particularly in the south. But if you ever notice, even Nicki Minaj uses that term now. She uses it in a couple of songs and she even used it on stage at the BET Awards during her acceptance speech. Anyone remember the word "Bling bling"? If Lil' wayne had copyrighted that word, he would probably be richer than Jay-z at this point. He still talks about regretting not putting a copyright on that word. I think MC Eiht is trying to prevent the same from happening to him I guess. But still I don't think it's Lochte;s place to copyright a word, I am sure he knows he did not create and has heard numerous times before it even came out of his mouth.

MC Eiht is famous for using the term "jeah." I've been a fan of his since the early 1990s, and saying "jeah" is something that he did constantly. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that he probably used it in nearly all of his songs, and in movies he's been in.

If this escalates into a legal war, MC Eiht will have no problem showing that he used the term in commerce LONG BEFORE Ryan Lochte gained prominence.

I like Lochte, but this is typical. Lochte should not be able to coin the phrase because at the end of the day, he didn't create it. He can't take bits and pieces from a culture and then claim it as his own. It's simply not fair. Who cares of this MC person is unknown. If you created a phrase and then some famous guy find and takes that phrase and claims it as his own, you would be pissed too.
How are you going to copyright something that isn't yours?

these articles draw out the trolls because tmz gives attention to any worthless rapper story that comes across raquel's desk. tmz must know that this guy has zero chance of prevailing in a trademark suit. its just frustrating to see some piece of crap trying to piggyback off lochte's spotlight. and lochte is a total douche, but he worked hard for his success and shouldnt have to publicly deal with these kinds of parasites.

Everybody knows mc eiht was the first one to start saying this. But the judge will probably let him trademark it because he's white.
