Tries to Blunt Romney

Criticism Over Candy

10/17/2012 3:48 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

CNN's Managing Editor sent an email around the office today, praising Candy Crowley and trying to blunt criticism that she was unfair to Mitt Romney.

The email -- sent by Mark Whitaker and obtained by TMZ -- is almost a series of talking points to address Candy's critics.

Here's the full email:

"Let's start with a big round of applause for Candy Crowley for a superb job under the most difficult circumstances imaginable. She and her team had to select and sequence questions in a matter of hours, and then she had to deal with the tricky format, the nervous questioners, the aggressive debaters, all while shutting out the pre-debate attempts to spin and intimidate her. She pulled it off masterfully.

The reviews on Candy's performance have been overwhelmingly positive but Romney supporters are going after her on two points, no doubt because their man did not have as good a night as he had in Denver. On the legitimacy of Candy fact-checking Romney on Obama's Rose Garden statement, it should be stressed that she was just stating a point of fact: Obama did talk about an act (or acts) of terror, no matter what you think he meant by that at the time. On why Obama got more time to speak, it should be noted that Candy and her commission producers tried to keep it even but that Obama went on longer largely because he speaks more slowly. We're going to do a word count to see whether, as in Denver, Romney actually got more words in even if he talked for a shorter period of time."

TMZ broke the story ... some honchos at CNN want the criticism to go away, even though it's shining a light on one of their most high-profile personalities -- and you just can't buy this type of publicity.

Oh, so now we're going after the moderator when a candidate can't pull their weight in the debate? mmkay.

CNN did not address the fact that they allowed Obama to go over his time limits and did not interrupt him like they did Romney. Actually they also let Obama interrupt him and then Candy engaged in a three way argument numerous times. I am not as CNN says a Romney supporter and could see all of this playing out. Actually the Terror comment was humorous to me because it was obviously planned.

Candy Crowley should get an Award for tolerating Romney for 90 minutes, in 2008 i Voted Republican But this time around Obama deserves my Vote, Obama is a true American Hero, Obama cares...

Let's call it like we saw it... Romney was bullying her. He spoke to her like she was beneath him. People want to vote for this guy?? He clearly has no respect for the "little" people so how would he respect the "little" people if we give him an office? There's more of us "little" people that there is of you...

two cents

She lost complete control early on in that debate. I was very disappointed in her.

Romney did just fine. Crowley is a libtard like most here . She was wrong period. Not surprising. Not worried Romney did fine. I would say it was a draw.

mods are there to make sure the debate runs is not their job to be fact checkers during the debate.once the mod inserts themselves into the debate to defend something another person has said it becomes a problem.people watch these things to form opinions on the candidates when you have a mod saying that romney is lying it looks bad.then to come out later and say romney was right.cnn claims they are not bias yet they defend this ****? could you imagine if the mod did that to obama? o hell no the media and tmz would be ripping them for it.

I think she did a fine job, but saying she had only hours to come up with the material is bull****. This debate has been scheduled for a while. She had all of the time in the world to deal with this and if she wasn't ready then somebody could have. I think she did fine but that defense is weaksauce.

Romney certainly pulled his weight, DESPITE the moderator being in the tank for Obama. She interrupted Romney over 20 times, let Obama talk 4 minutes longer, and actually stood up and interrupted Romney to LIE about what Obama said regarding Libya being an act of terror and refused to allow Romney time to rebut (and then she admitted AFTER the debate that Romney was actually right!) The list goes ON and ON. I know TMZ is blatantly liberal like most of the other mainstream media, but it'd be a nice change of pace to actually have some neutral news every now and then. And an unbiased debate moderator would be a treat too!! (Obama/Biden have been able to speak longer in each debate by a large margin, and Romney/Ryan were rudely interrupted countless times.)

First of all I think someone is trying to punk you TMZ and secondly stay the hell out of the political arena. If you don't you will definitely lose viewers.

also if crowley is so eager to be fact checker.she should at least she has her facts right before chiming in.instead of chiming in only to have to backtrack a day later.

Big deal, the Republicans cried the same thing when Martha Raddatz moderated the vice presidential debate. Unless they have a clear victory like they did in the first one they will find something to cry about. They may have said the same about Jim Lehrer, but I didn't happen to catch FOX that day. The only thing that you make them happy is to have one of Fox News's big boobed blondes asking for Obama to prove he was a US citizen and how he want to seal from the rich and give to the poor.
