Nike has ended its contract with Lance Armstrong -- claiming the athlete "misled" the company amid allegations of doping.

"Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him," the company says.

Armstrong also announced he will step down as chairman of the Livestrong cancer-fighting charity as of this morning. Nike says they will continue to support the organization.

"To spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship," Armstrong says in a statement.

The move comes a week after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a report detailing Armstrong's direct involvement in what it called "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen."

As we previously reported, Lance has been banned from cycling for life ... but he still denies any wrongdoing.

NIKE MEANS"WINGED GODDESS OF VICTORY"
IT DOES NOT MEAN TO ACT LIKE A CREEPY LIAR HIDING SECRET POTION ROID-BUTTER TO MAKE TOAST OUT OF THE COMPETITION SO HIS PRIMA DONNA NEED TO STAND ON A RISER WAS AT NOT ONLY THE COST OF HIS HONOR BUT ALL THE WILLING PARTICIPANTS HE WAS A PUSHER TO OF THE SAME VANITY RIDDEN LIE HE SHOVELED.
STEPPENWOLF'S TUNE "THE PUSHER" WILL NOW BE PLAYING EVERYDAY IN LANCES HEAD.

I don't follow this sport. But there was something about this guy that rubbed me the wrong way. I guess my gut was right.

Disgraceful. I don't follow cycling, but I have heard of Lance's achievements adversities he overcame. I thought it was a great American story, something we could all be proud of. To find out it was all built on a web of deceit and cheating was a complete and utter disappointment.
Let his name be forgotten and banished to obscurity. That should be the least of his punishment IMO.

It's not like Lance was the only person ever, ever, ever in the history of the sport who doped. He just did it better and pissed the rest of them off.

This is complete crap. Lance Armstrong gives up because haters keep coming out of the woodwork saying he cheated. No doctors, mind you, just so-called "teammates" who probably hated him for his accomplishments and fame. Can't blame him for giving up on his constant defense, because fighting all that crap has got to hurt the pocketbook eventually.

So because he gives up, because he realizes that all it comes down to is "he said, she said", and no matter what, they're gonna keep coming after him, everyone assumes he's guilty. No, he's probably not.

Armstrong went through over 500 drug tests in his career, and passed them all, but that wasn't enough for people. Livestrong has raised over half a billion dollars for charitable causes and research, but THAT's not enough for people. Armstrong survived two types of cancer, but THAT'S not enough for people. I mean, screw the 7 Tour wins, not even talking about that. Why the hell can't this guy get a break?

It's obvious that Armstrong has separated himself from LiveStrong for the good of the organization. So because of that, Nike drops him? WTF?

FU, Nike. You still sponsor Michael Vick. You still sponsor Tiger Woods. You still sponsor Terell Owens. But Lance Armstrong is the unsponsorable monster? People need to really think about this

perhaps the face of Nike should be young teens in 3rd world countries sewing their pricey products for litterally pennies an hour!
give them the millions- spread it around to the factory workers who can not, with an entire years pay, be able to afford one pair of Nike`s fancy running
....
no respect for Armstrong
