KC Chiefs Player

Kills GF, Self

12/1/2012 10:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

1201-jovan_belcher_getty-1Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend early this morning, then drove to the team facility and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager, this according to the Kansas City Police Department.

Police Capt. David Lindaman says that Belcher and his girlfriend -- who had just given birth to the couple's child three months earlier -- began arguing around 7:00 AM local time.

Lindaman says Belcher shot the woman multiple times and she was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police say Belcher left the scene and drove to the stadium where he was confronted by team personnel, including GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel. According to police, they tried to keep Belcher from committing additional acts of violence.

Just as police arrived on the scene, they heard a gunshot and discovered Belcher had shot himself in the head. Cops say before firing the shot, Belcher thanked Pioli and Crennel for all they had done for him.

The coaches told police they never felt as if they were in danger.

Belcher had been with the Chiefs for four seasons after being undrafted out of the University of Maine.

The Chiefs host the Carolina Panthers tomorrow and the game will be going forward as planned. A team spokesman says Crennel plans to coach.

Kansas City Chiefs Chairman & CEO Clark Hunt released a statement saying, "The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted."

That is beyond horrific. A mother witnessing the murder of her daughter ... a coach and team members witnessing the suicide of one of their own ... a baby with no parents ... So many lives forever changed ... My sympathies to the family and friends of both.

This is an example of the dirty little secret the NFL wants to go away all the head trauma these men suffer. Sure they will sit a qb with a cuncussion but a linebacker job is to hide any trauma and play through it .from Seau to belcher there is a serious problem in the NFL that needs to be addressed

Anyone ever heard of mental illness? You people are bashing him so horribly. The entire situation is very tragic! From the baby that no longer has a mom and dad, to a woman who didn't deserve to lose her life that way, and yes to even the man who was so broken at that moment that he felt like there was no other way. I will pray for ALL of those that have been affected by this. And for those of you that are saying he should burn in hell, well, you should really just learn to shut up. You have NO idea what was in this man's mind when he did this. As many hits as our football players take I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. Oh yeah, and GO CHIEFS!

I heard the NFL was having a tough time deciding whether or not to play on Sunday?! Why? He's a murderer who got what he deserved. I feel horrible for the kid and other family involved, but no one should be grieving for this piece of ****!

Yes mental illness exist and is a part of a very harsh reality, but his girlfriend-the mother of his child was innocent. He should've just taken is own life and left hers be. That child is only 3 months old and will never know her parents now. Such a sad situation.

I've had an amazing relationship, marriage etc then all all of a sudden my hubbies diagnosed with a mental disorder. yeah - it throw you for a loop and trust me - things come to a serious head - don't judge unless you've been there a-holes!!
