Australian DJs

Due to Suicide

12/7/2012 11:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

The two Australian DJs behind the Kate Middleton hospital prank that may have led to the suicide of a nurse have decided to REMOVE themselves from the airwaves.

Southern Cross Austereo, the company that owns the station, has released a statement ... saying, "SCA and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward VII’s Hospital."

SCA says the CEO has spoken with both of the DJs ... who are both "deeply shocked" over the tragedy.

The company adds, "SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy."

Interesting that SCA did NOT pull the DJs off the air immediately following the prank ... but instead waited until the backlash after Saldanha's suicide.

It was a prank call. It was mildly funny. So what?! Obviously this nurse was unbalanced to begin with, to be so sensitive and not able to take a joke? And the media is playing holier than thou? Like they don't have blood on their hands for millions of other instances of stupid reporting? The bigger problem is how obsessed this world is with this f-ing baby! WTF cares?! Wow, his sperm met her egg. Wow, how talented. How historic. Why is that news? This insane obsession with "royalty" is just so ridiculous. There are people starving as we speak, yet we're so worried about a f-ing radio prank call? What I wouldn't pay to hear Captain Janks prank CNN right now during this story!

Seriously folks - how many DJ's pull pranks like this? It happens every single day on radio shows across the globe. While the nurse's suicide is tragic and my prayers go to her family - it is NOT the DJ's fault that she chose to commit suicide. Stop the finger pointing! People are responsible for their own choices....

Will Ryan Seacrest stop Ryan's roses now?

I'm an Australian and heard this prank on air. Since then the DJ's involved have made fun of the situation on air and have shown no remorse.
Also this picture is NOT of the DJ's involved!

Like the prank or not...doesn't make sense. If she killed herself, then she was depressed or not mentally stable already. It could have been a bad review or been fired the boss? Stupid. Blaming the DJ's is like blaming KFC for being fat.

Oh really? So a joke is a joke even if it involves criminal behavior? They should have known that IF they were successful in getting thru that when the truth came out that SOMEONE was going to be held responsible for letting the information out

DJs have been doing this stuff for 40 years. They never expected to actually get through to the room. I feel bad for the lady but she obviously wasnt too stable

I do think they should be held accountable, but so should the hospital, for not having a plan in place for the royals to receive phone calls. And even more so--that the royal security team had no protocol for the hospital to follow--the nurses shouldn't have to decide whether or not they should put a call through. There could have easily been a way to avoid this call going through.

I don't get how the hell they could get through with those horrible impressions. In their apology they said they honestly thought they would've just been hung up on. Yeah they're dumb-a$$es for doing it but the hospital is even dumber for believing it.

Uh, they're not "suspending themselves". The station yanked them off the air because of the blowback it's now getting. Until today, the station was boasting all over its website about having pulled off such a brilliant hoax.

oh my gosh...she really committed suicide over this? They didn't confirm the suicide. I doubt she would have lost her job over this. She must have had have been really sensitive or extremely high standards for herself that she wasn't able to handle this situation. I don't know. Such an extreme thing to do. You have to have thick skin as a nurse.

I have a friend who miscarried with hyperemesis gravidarum and know of another woman from work who actually died.

Calling up to find out Kate's condition is so beyond a "prank" it is not funny. What if the nurse told these idiots that Kate had miscarried or was dead? Would that still be considered "hilarious" as many people thought the "prank" was?

Fire 'em. Pranks are cruel. All pranks are just mean and cruel because they are based on making a fool out of someone. We all laugh at someone's suffering. Very funny.
