Aussie DJ

Bragged About Royal Prank

BEFORE Nurse Suicide

12/9/2012 2:17 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

1209-royal-mel-greig-tmzThe Australian DJ who pretended to be Queen Elizabeth II in a prank phone call ... BRAGGED about her accomplishment on Facebook ... right before the nurse who answered the call committed suicide.

TMZ obtained a screenshot of Mel Greig's Fbook page taken Friday evening in Australia ... a.k.a. BEFORE news broke that Jacintha Saldanha -- the nurse duped by Greig and her co-host -- had been found dead in London.

The post reads ... "Why is it that I can impersonate the queen to get private royal information but no one believes I'm the queen for a free champagne whilst out?"

Greig attached a pic to the post -- of herself and another chick, smiling and hanging out at a bar.

We reached out to Mel's rep for comment ... who said (again), "No one could have ever predicted the tragic sequence of events that followed the prank call."

As TMZ previously reported ... Greig and her co-host Michael Christian shut down their Facebook and Twitter pages immediately after the nurse's death -- and suspended their gig at the station.

You really have to hand it to the British, they are the kings of misdirection. They have so eloquently directed all the attention to a small radio station in the antipodes so that no one even stops to realise what drove this poor lady over the edge was her definite impending employment termination. Now how embarrassing would that be for good ol' St Georges if that got into the public! The headline should really be "Hospital Fires Nurse Over Prank, She Commits Suicide". Draws far too many questions about their staff training and support programmes, and that simply will not do!

I think everybody should wait for a cause of death before jumping to conclusions. She could have died of suicide, or it could have been natural causes or it could even have been homicide by somebody who felt she shamed them. Who knows? There isn't much point in discussing it until a COD is given.

I think the prank was just stupid and childish. But it wasn't meant to be a mean spirited one. They couldn't possibly have know that would happen. The nurse must have had other issued besides this. I am not one for pranks myself because I find them annoying . However, we can't go tip toeing thru life afraid to utter one word cause someone might just lose it. For me, its about the intent of the joke that counts. And in my opinion, the really didn't mean any real harm.

Yup, keep trying to pin the blame on them TMZ. If the blame lies anywhere, it is with the staff at the hospital that constantly hounded her for transferring a call. The nurse has prior issues, otherwise she would still be alive.

TMZ, if Britney Spears had killed herself back when you guys were relentlessly hounding her (knowing she had obvious mental issues) - would YOU BE AT FAULT? Huh, Harvey?

Wow let it go. Kick a dog while it is down. Djs have done this crap for decades. It was intentional to bring a suicide.

i'm genuinely surprised by the reaction of some friends back in London who are really angry at the DJs - the `impersonation' is so crazy and juvenile, there's no way they ever thought anyone would take them seriously! You know they had to be sitting there thinking `OMG did we just get put thru to a nurse?' when what they expected was to get hung up on. The nurse who died wasn't even the one who gave out information, she just transferred the call - she clearly had mental health problems long before this. And her name and face hadn't been disclosed to the public, so she wasnt humiliated or being hounded. Both Prince Charles and Prince William had made jokes about the prank before the nurse died, they saw it as a fair go - it was objectively a very funny idea that they couldn't have foreseen going as far as it did. Let the DJs off the hook.

It's sad to see how much enjoyment people get from pranks. Making someone else look stupid is excused, because "it happens all the time" and "they didn't really mean for this to happen". Obviously no one they know is as conscientious as this nurse, so the nurse must be demented. Aren't we a smarmy lot?

"Why is it that I can impersonate the queen to get private royal information...." This was a tasteless 'prank' to begin with. The only 'funny' idea the could come up was involving a hospital and violating a sick, pregnant woman's privacy?

I find it awfully suspicious this woman "mysteriously died" after giving out royal medical information. Ofcourse its going to be deemed a suicide!I have no doubts the queen has Scotland yard in her pocket ..didn't they recently find a body on her property as well? Food for thought, though I hope I'm not the only one thinking it..

Geezus H - to all of you folks defending this DJ, if it were in grade school or high school you would call this activity buling and would be calling for a new "law" to protect those that were treated bad. News flash - their bull **** digital "bulling" caused some one to kill themselves: they should feel like **** and really give some serious thought about their future!

I remember when I was a kid, Rick Deez got suspended from the air for counting back the months of Princess Di's pregnancy and insinuating prince charles was NOT THE FATHER! Suspended immediately and there were apologies. He returned and they will to. This was NOT their fault.

Anyone that takes their own life has serious mental problems to begin with. And she was a nurse! Lucky her mental problems didn't hurt any patients.
