Kristin Chenoweth

American Airlines

Treated Me Like a Dog

Kristin Chenoweth says she was the victim of a screaming, angry gate agent who bullied her and embarrassed her when she tried to board an American Airlines flight with her emotional support dog ... and now the airline is begging for her forgiveness.

TMZ has learned, the altercation went down this week as Kristin boarded a flight from Dallas to L.A.. We're told Kristin had her emotional support dog in tow -- as she always does -- when she was confronted by a gate agent supervisor who claimed Kristin didn't have the proper paperwork to bring the dog on board.

When Kristin protested, insisting she had done everything correctly, the agent got "verbally abusive" in front of several passengers ... scolding the actress ... and Kristin was so shaken up, she burst into tears.

Eventually airline officials realized a mistake had been made -- and Kristin was allowed to board the flight with her dog. Whoops.

After the flight, Kristin tweeted, "American Airlines: Dallas flight attnt supervisor Ms. Kidwell. Abuse not okay. #tripfromhell."

Seems American Airlines was paying attention to the tweet -- because a rep for AA tells us, "We have been in touch with Ms. Chenoweth to offer our apologies for the misunderstanding. We refunded the [$125] cabin pet charge as soon as we realized the mistake. We hope she will consider flying American again in the future."

Kristin wasn't lying when she said she flies with the dog all the time -- we shot video of her last month with her dog Madeline ... and everything seemed fine.

American Airlines treats everyone like a dog these days. They used to be one of my favorite airlines, but after my last trip, I avoid them now at all cost. My last experience was so bad and tried to call and discuss how I was treated and they don't even take incoming calls any more, that to me says they don't care and basically F off!!!

I was on a flight with my husband, and the flight attendant yelled at him because she thought he wasn't wearing his seatbelt, (he was). Some of these employees are just plain nasty. We complained in a letter, using her name, and did receive a reply. Maybe twitter is the better way to go though, more embarrassing for the Airline. The real problem is, if a FA is nasty, you're stuck with them, unlike most other situations where you can leave.

As someone who trains dogs for this purpose, seeing all of these "celebrities" with "service dogs" is irritating. These celebrities are neither disabled nor handicapped in any way. They get their physicians to sign a letter saying their dogs travle with them for "therapuetic" reasons, and therefore the airlines must accept them in the cabin (not in a traveling crate) and the celebrity does not have to pay for this to boot. Hope they feel just a little guilty when someone with a seeing eye dog cannot board because they've filled the quota for one dog per cabin. Never ceases to disgust me. Perhaps Ms. Chenowith and Ashley Judd who also gets away with this are mentally disabled. THAT I would believe.

Not saying they should've embarassed her or anything, but service dog?? Seriously? Gimme a break.

A prime example of girls to avoid at all costs. You'll never rank above her "baby" in a relationship.

Exactly Why does she need a "service" dog?

Kristen is a spoiled, rotten, competitive brat. They should have kicked her phony baloney ass of the plane.

Why do all these celebs suddenly have Service Dogs? Is being a Diva a disability now???

Anyone can take a small dog or cat (some other animals too) onto a plane and put them under the seat if they pay the fee. The main point here is that the airlines charge a fortune to carry on a pet. In some cases it costs more than the passenger ticket. Having a service dog means that they can not deny the pet.
