Lakers Owner Jerry Buss

Dies in L.A. Hospital

2/18/2013 7:59 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

Jerry Buss -- owner of the Los Angeles Lakers -- died early this morning at the age of 80.

Buss had been hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in L.A. for the past few months due to a previously undisclosed intestinal problem ... though it was revealed yesterday he'd been battling cancer the entire time.

After starting his career as a chemist, Buss soon found his true calling in the real estate biz ... snapping up properties all over L.A. before moving on to the sporting world.

In 1979, Buss made history when he purchased the Lakers, the L.A. Kings and The Forum for $67.5 million -- at that time, the largest transaction in sports.

Under his ownership, Buss watched dozens of all-time greats -- including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant -- win the Lakers 10 NBA Championships. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Buss was also an avid poker player ... and appeared on several TV shows, including "High Stakes Poker" and "Poker After Dark."

He is survived by his six children.

The Big Bowowski

Im at a loss for words. Thanks for all the great memories you and your team have given us Angelenos. Thanks for giving me the many opportunities to stand on Figueroa st. to watch Magic, Kareem,Shaq, Kobe and many, many others, pass by on the parade route holding the numerous championship trophies they earned on behalf of our great city. To me, Dr. Buss is one of the greatest owners of all time and I sorely hope that Jim and Jeanie keep the legacy that he created going strong. I also hope that our GM, Mitch Kupchak will step up and get our Lakers back on track to being the championship team it should be and will be again. Make Jerry proud guys. Donald Sterling could have learned a lot from Dr. Buss. Lob city should have been around years ago contending for titles. RIP Dr. Jerry Buss. Your legacy will never be forgotten

On May 29, 2007, Buss was issued a citation for driving under the influence after two California Highway Patrol officers saw him driving his gold Mercedes-Benz on the wrong side of the road in the coastal community of Carlsbad in northern San Diego County, with a 23-year-old woman passenger. After failing a field sobriety test, Buss was taken into custody, given a blood test and booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol level over 0.08

I seem to remember that TMZ caught him getting into a car no more than a few weeks ago. If so, why not repost that video as a remembrance.
