Paula Deen

My N-Word Excuse ...

I'm Old

6/20/2013 10:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0620_paula_deen_article_tmzPaula Deen is using the "I'm from the South" excuse to justify her use of the N-word ... saying that when she grew up, dropping an N-bomb was no big deal because everyone was racist.

Paula Deen Enterprises just issued the following statement to TMZ ... "During a deposition where she swore to tell the truth, Ms. Deen recounted having used a racial epithet in the past, speaking largely about a time in American history which was quite different than today."

FYI -- the "time" Paula admitted to using the N-word was 1986!!!!!

Anyway, the statement continues ... "[Paula] was born 60 years ago when America's South had schools that were segregated, different bathrooms, different restaurants and Americans rode in different parts of the bus. This is not today."

"To be clear Ms. Deen does not find acceptable the use of this term under any circumstance by anyone nor condone any form of racism or discrimination. "

As we previously reported, Deen admitted using the N-word during a sworn deposition stemming from a lawsuit ... in which the chef and her brother are accused of using offensive language at Paula's restaurant in Georgia.

I'm old too (61) -- a contemporary of Ms. Deen, hence she should remember this adage: "you live and you learn." But then, I'm a Californian.

There are a lot of blacks or whites who are racist. It goes both ways. Somehow being "offended" by words is a bigger deal than it should be. Smile, use your manners and be nice to everyone.

She is right in a way. And I was in the south back in 1986 and racism was alive and well back then. An older person such as herself has probably used the N word so many times it would be shocking to people today. That's the way it was back then. That's not an excuse, but it is true. The real question is whether she is a racist who engages in racist behavior? A person her age using the N word is not that surprising to me. But if she is discriminating against people and doing things that hurt minorities she is a racist.

FYI: Not ALL "blacks" use that word. Stop the stereotyping.

I am the same age as Paula and also grew up in the segregated south. It's not OK to use the N word and never was. Our local police department is very strict that its own members not use the word. The last policeman that was demoted for using it was black.

I just do not understand where all the hate comes from! We as so called African Americans had to sacrifice our freedom for this country to be what it is today. As a black American this is very upsetting to see all the hate in this feed.

Seems to me that people are not seeing something that is rare. HONESTY. She told the truth and 99% of this so called forward thinking non-racist free thinking society everyone seems to think they belong to are simply a bunch of lying backstabbers. Get off the high horses, many people have to make a conscious effort not to be racist. Judgemental a$$es are just as bad a as racists in my book.

I agree that blacks should not be offended when other races use the N word because a lot of other blacks refer to them selves as *****s. It is time for blacks to stop blaming the white man for everything and focus on showing love for one another! Its not white people that are out here shooting all the black youth down in the streets. Its other black people. we have no unity and no real voice!

any one who uses the N word is ignorant no matter what color they are. We as blacks need to start to hold each other accountable for mistreating one another!

Funny how some are saying, get over it, it's just a word. It's a word that is used to insult people. When Lil Rapper was walking over the flag, there were posts that said, Who cares, it's just a piece of cloth. In reality it is the symbol of this country, and the flags of other countries should be held in high regard. This is the kind of mentality that is bringing this country even lower than it already is. There are a ton of people out there who have no pride or even the slightest idea on how honor and true integrity makes a better society. Until we all stop with this nonsence, we will always be known as a war mongering, racist, money hungery nation that cares less for their own people than they do about the people in the rest of the world.

So no one has ever used the word? Please. Like no one has ever told any racists jokes about any ethnicity. That's BS. Everyone talks crap doesn't mean their racist.

You are old?!? Well, I'm a little older than the president and have seen a little bit as well. "Old" has nothing to do with it - Being racist or manifesting racist leanings is old, and for those who suffer some slight daily due to actual or perceived bias it has gotten "old." The Brit's who developed the Gatlin gun to machine gun Africans on their birthlands is "old" news, nevertheless relevant. The slave trade is "old" new news, but sadly still occurs and is relevant. If Dr. King were alive today, he'd be a bit "old." The Honorable Mandela, is certainly "old," and suffered at the hands of those certainly older, but, no "Old," didn't make you do it. You say what you're thinking; and that's current, and now, but yes, it gets old, and is still wrong and always has been. Perhaps you need time away from spewing and should enter repose and reflection away from privileged camera and mike.
