James Gandolfini
suffered an indignity after he died in Rome -- someone apparently stole his expensive Rolex watch within hours after he died ... TMZ has learned.

We've obtained an insurance form filed by James' people.  According to the form and family sources, someone stole a $3,000 Rolex submariner watch from James' hotel room on the day he died.

The insurance form says there was no damage to the room and there's no mention of forced entry.  There's no suspect listed on the form ... but the implication is that someone may have pilfered the item during the commotion following the heart attack that killed the actor.

The form doesn't specifically describe the type of submariner that was stolen, but they vary wildly -- some are diamond encrusted, some are platinum and some are gold.

We found a pic of James at the "Nicky Deuce" premiere in May -- a month before he died -- and he was wearing a watch that could be the Rolex in question.

I'm James' biggest fan, if anyone has this watch, I might be willing to pay $12k cash no questions.

Come on people it's one thing to steal from a person who is alive but to steal from a dead person? Damn shame and its a bigger shame cause this guy was a hell of a actor and a great guy R.I.P

Is it really that hard to figure out.there are only very few people around him and during any stay in any hotel there are only certain people allowed to access these rooms the place he was staying will have a list of these people. now just see who was working that shiftand get a list of who reported his death first there is only a handful of people who could of done it besides its not rocket science to figure out it was someone dumb enough to steal a watch that has its own ser numbers that's kept on file ..Rolex cost 40,thousand and up not 3,000 whose not going to notice a hotel. employe sporting a 40 thousand dollar watch...lol.....

Four years ago, the stainless steel Submariner was 6800 purchased new. They can go into the tens of thousands, and even hundreds of thousands with gold or jewels. The value of it might be $3K if you're talking about the retail value of that watch in it's current condition (if it were well worn). But replacement value would be in the $7k range.

Looks no different than a Guess watch. $3000? I can get a Guess for $100 that looks just like it. If it runs and can tell the time that's all I need.

And the Sub is going to run more than 3K... Just for the record.. Looks like he's wearing the standard black face.. So probably no more than 5K...

Hell If I Know

Italy is a hot bed of pick pockets. You have to hide your purse and wallet in one of those hideaway from theives things that go under your clothes when you visit that country as a tourist. Watch your back, your wallet and your wife in that country. Italian men will come right up to women on the street and pinch them and think nothing of it.

I have that exact Rolex Sub, bought it last year.....$8200 and have in insured for replacement value which goes up every year. If he had it valued at 3k then he bought it in the late 90's and didn't (for whatever reason) pay they extra $8 a year (no joke) for replacement value vs. purchase price

The particular Rolex he is shown wearing in the picture appears to be a Submariner model 116610LN, which is the new "low end" for a Submariner, and after tax it will cost you about $10,000. The older classic entry level Sub is the 16610, which is out of production, but used in good condition will cost between $4,000 and $5,500.

How do I know? Because I have been drooling over that watch for a few years now and am still considering selling my children into white slavery so I can have one (joke).

What can I say? Anyone who is not a "watch person" just wouldn't understand.

Both the 3000 and 30,000 numbers seem out of whack, if that is the watch, which looks like the basic steel submariner, which goes for around 8 grand. It's possible it was white gold or something, which would raise the price. But they hold their value pretty well, so you wouldn't find a used one for that either.
