NBA player Ryan Anderson fought through tears today as he spoke publicly about his gf Gia Allemand's suicide ... saying her death has given him new purpose in his life.

Anderson -- who plays for the New Orleans Pelicans -- opened up during the team's media day, telling reporters he hadn't planned to talk about it, but then tearfully said ... "we have a huge plan to do something great in her name that's going to help a lot of people."

As we reported ... Gia, who was once on "The Bachelor" ... committed suicide in August -- just a few hours after she had a bitter fight with Anderson.

Anderson didn't spell it out, but it sounded like he was talking about Gia's rumored battle with depression. He got really choked up as he said  ... "This is a topic that is not talked about enough."

Considering the degree of ignorance in the first four comments, the topic of depression definitely needs to be discussed.

How about a little more love and support when people are dealing with depression? That would be a start.

Come on, she wanted attention when she was alive, and is still getting it now. Too bad there are so many people out there without a clue as to what is important in life.

Poor guy feels responsible. That's what happens to the ones left behind. It will haunt him.

Is the foundation going to be for insane bitches who are unlovable and commit suicide when they realize that no man will ever be able to fill the hole in their heart left by their father walking out on them?

I imagine the value of his crib declined substantially as a result of her noose swinging. It's probably on the market already. She will haunt that house and him for the rest of his life.

The ignorance in these comments are disturbing. As a Pelicans fan and a friend of Ryan's, I know what kind of person Ryan is. He's a man of Jesus and one of the most pure and genuine people you'll ever meet. Please quit making it seem like Ryan is a cold, senseless man when it's not the case. You people seriously make me sick.

Do we even know if she was clinically depressed? Or was she just an attention whore? I ask this as someone who has been affected by suicide, a sibling who was clinically depressed for years. It sounds like this girl was furious that she didn't get her way and threw a fit--she didn't think it all the way through. There's a big difference.
