Jameis Winston

Signs Cops Covered Up Sexual Assault Allegations

11/14/2013 12:10 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

1113_jameis_winston_3
There's evidence Tallahassee cops tried to sweep the sexual assault investigation targeting Florida State University QB Jameis Winston under the rug to protect the team and its star player ... and ONLY took aggressive steps after TMZ Sports started asking questions.

Sources in the State Attorney's Office tell us they never even knew about the investigation until Tuesday ... JUST ONE DAY AFTER TMZ Sports began making calls to cops about the alleged assault.

Our sources in the State Attorney's Office say ... it was highly unusual cops wouldn't have filled them in about the case until this week.  The sources say cops would have typically notified them when the investigation was completed, and Winston's lawyer reportedly says cops told him it was completed in February.

Now get this ... TMZ Sports started calling police about the case on Monday.  We were told someone would get back to us later that day, but there was radio silence for 2 days ... we made repeated calls Tuesday and Wednesday and no one got back to us until late Wednesday afternoon.

Sources in the State Attorney's Office tell us ... the timing -- getting notified about the case months after it supposedly was closed and just a day after TMZ started calling -- is suspicious.

The State Attorney has now re-activated the case and sent it back to cops for further investigation.

And there's a twist -- guess what would happen if Winston was even CHARGED with felony sexual assault -- under FSU's rules ... he would be AUTOMATICALLY BENCHED ... killing the team's national championship hopes and his Heisman Trophy chances.

tmz really needs to get their facts straight he wasn't even playing for florida state when everything happened so how are the police protecting their star player?

I live in Tallahassee and TMZ is not telling the truth. First the investigation was closed a year ago without even talking to Jamis. The police are not the best here but they are not covering up anything this was a year ago before he even started FSU so it would be silly to say they are covering it up. There has been nothing released that states what connection he has to this case. He hasn't been charged and there are witnesses . This could ruin a young man's life . Were did this"tip" come from? Sounds like to me someone is trying to dis credit him . What happened to playing the football game on the field? TMZ knows nothing and is filling in the blanks for their own ratings

TMZ is nothing more than sensationalistic reporting. Cover up? Please. For those of you idiots that are automatically assuming that Winston is guilty - shame on you. What ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty?" The "suspect" was NOT named in the allegation and described as 5-9 to 5-11. The woman had been drinking so of COURSE she could get the height wrong or who knows, she just may be bad at JUDGING how tall someone is, BUT if Winston is guilty like many of you idiots have already decided, why didn't the woman simply say, "Jameis Winston assaulted me." And as far as you moronic conspiracy theorists that automatically assume that there is a cover-up by the police I can tell you this - I used to live in Tallahassee. The cops there seem to be more apt to QUICKLY burn a FSU football player than to cover something up. And remember, nobody had ANY idea who the heck this 19 year old kid WAS back in Dec of 2012 other than JUST ANOTHER FOOTBALL PLAYER. WHY in heaven's name would they cover that up? Bottom line - the cops didn't feel that there was enough evidence to even proceed with a case. Is that SO hard to believe just because Winston is now a star? TMZ should be ashamed for being such idiots.

The cops do not have to report an allegation to the State Attorney if they don't have enough proof to prove a crime occurred...nor should they. They do sometimes to get a second opinion, but it's certainly not a coverup if they don't. Chances are if the cops don't think they have probable cause to arrest the State won't do anything with the charges because they need proof Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. If they sent it back to the cops for further investigation , they've already determined there's not sufficient proof at this time. I love the comments that say this "covert up" is unfair to the "victim." She doesn't want to prosecute! That's probably part of the reason they haven't pursued it further...not part of the

TMZ you really need to get some legal people on your staff. Unless it is a policy of the Tallahassee PD, the SAO is not made privy of every open, inactive pending (more information), or closed case UNTIL it is presented to the SAO for a filing decision, if that even happens. Not every case is sent to the SAO. Cases where in the investigator does not feel there is enough PC to file are closed out. Cases like Rape and Murder cases, because there is no statute of limitations on them, are routinely kept open until all the evidence possible can be collected. It is also done for posterity as you don't want to tell the victim of a heinous crime that their case is closed, even if you don't have any new leads or info. Of course the LEON County SAO is going to say they haven't heard about the case, because they hadn't and they wouldn't of until it is time to be filed. The fact that the SAO sent the case back to the cops, is most likely a signal that there is not enough PC for the SAO to file, and they are asking the police to do some more investigating. This isn't TV people. THis is how it works in real life.

Obviously this was started by Alabama. Look back at history...last year's ND player...etc etc....Nick Saban playing his BS games. He will cost this young man the Heisman and Saban should be charged with a crime.

tmz
A celebrity news source comprised of achingly annoying paparazzi and are completely oblivious to how pathetic and boring their news is. They will disturb a celebrity so much to simply get an aggravated reaction to report on. The organization on the whole is like a car crash-- you can't look away (at least for a minute) because of how stupid they are, which is why they're still around.

FSU is 9-0 do you really think anyone could play the football that Jameis Winston has if he knew in his heart he had anything to really do with this case? I know you guys have no heart how you go after people. I have looked at your so called TV show for no longer then a minute at best. You don't care who you hurt and the only reason you can sleep at night is because you hide behind freedom of the press when overall your nothing but Trash TV at Best! I hope Jameis Winston goes after you and sues you for Libel and anything else that sticks.

Instead of alleging that there is a cover-up going on, TMZ, do your homework! Jameis Winston doesn't even fit the description that the alleged victim gave police that morning. I'm more interested in how TMZ come to find out that there was ever a sex assault case? It seems the case was closed, as of February 2013 (according to Winston's attorney). The timing of this "breaking news" is quite suspicious!

Look at how TMZ (eager to get the attention, like other tabloids) has twisting the facts.

First, why would the police turn a case to the DA office when the testimony they have is about a 5 ft 9 240 lbs person and Winston is 6 ft 4 and 220 lbs.
A 5 ft 9 240 lbs person is a short and very overweight person. A 6 ft 4 220 lbs is a tall and definitely fit. How the accuser would make such a mistake in her original accusation?

What is the evidence to turn this to the DA office?

The case was closed. Only when TMZ tried to create trouble to the poor police officers that they decided to turn it to the DA office.

Conclusion: TMZ is tabloid of the worse kind.

I have it very odd that TMZ would run with a story like this, considering the timing of Florida State Football program, someone who doesnt care for Fsu pointed this story to TMZ
