Titanic

Extra Sues

I Want a Shipload of Money

2/19/2014 12:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

021814_titanic_launch"Yes. Yes ma'am." These are the words a movie extra believes are worth a fortune ... words he brilliantly delivered in "Titanic" ... words over which he is now suing.

The extra -- a guy named Vi Jay -- has filed the lawsuit against 20th Century Fox, claiming he was cast as a non-speaking background actor in the embarking scene at the beginning of the movie.  Vi says the day of the shoot, James Cameron spontaneously gave him a career-changing line.

"Yes. Yes ma'am." Vi delivers the line to Kathy Bates' character as she hands him her luggage.

Vi says he was paid a measly $60 a day -- per his agreement as an extra -- but now says the line he delivered entitles him to SAG (Screen Actors' Guild) benefits, specifically RESIDUALS.

And Vi might have a point -- we spoke to a rep from SAG, who says actors with speaking roles (no matter how small) are typically entitled to residual money.

Vi says 20th Century Fox grossed more than $2 billion from the flick, and he wants his tiny share.

Rules are rules.. even if it took 17 years to find out. That movie made a lot of money and I would be pissed too. He's obviously not asking for too much.. it was one line.

Half of the people making comments know nothing about the business. The article is completely accurate; he is entitled to a percentage of that pay. There's no statute of limitations on residuals. Good grief!

Ugh

The guy would be due some cash for sure. I was an extra in a movie back in 2000 and I was upgraded to a one line speaking role just like this guy. 14 years later, I still get checks. They are very small now (a couple hundred bucks per year) but the film I was in only made about 5 percent of what Titanic has grossed. He's not gonna get rich but to a lot of people $10,000- 15,000 would make a world of difference.

All the negative comments about this man are unwarranted and whomever makes them sound like bitter "never was" actors, shameful. Let's all wake up to reality, James Cameron made a huge mistake and he knows it, he will settle this case for a large sum of money and I bet the amount will be undisclosed and stipulated to by the plaintiff. This is a very important potentially precedent setting case, it will assure production companies will treat everyone equally and fairly regardless of class position ( in this case, an Extra) This man did the same job as Leonardo DiCaprio, granted less lines but by the guidelines of SAG the same job, he is entitled to compensation and credit for his performance, period. Don't let the James Cameron publicity machine taint this man in any way. This now for them it's all about damage control.

Here is another example that happened last year in the movie Argo. This actor had to audition for the part, he didn't have lines but the production company didn't even give him credit as an Extra by name, in the film. Watch video http://youtu.be/33HEKUekfXo

en Todo Momento!!

extras should just organize their own awards, like an 'extras oscars' or something. best 'walk thru', best 'coffee table seated', best dog walk thru scene, best 'anger face', etc. would be totally awesome, and they could develop like their own whole side show in hollywood. their award can like like the golden fart dust, without the whole crappy forced hollywood celeb scene.
