Tracy Morgan Crash

NJ Turnpike is a Death Trap ...

Says Another Crash Victim's Family

6/10/2014 12:50 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

Tracy Morgan's deadly 6-car pileup should be an alarm for New Jersey officials to make some big changes before more lives are lost ... this according to the family of a truck driver who died on the same dangerous stretch of highway.

The Walmart truck that plowed into Tracy's vehicle was hurtling down the NJ Turnpike -- and back in April, just a few miles away ... John Visconti III was killed in an eerily similar crash.

TMZ spoke to his mother, Mary Visconti who was outraged by the carnage of Morgan's accident ... "How many people have to die on the Turnpike before something is done? It is ridiculous."

Mary says her son was driving an 18-wheeler when he swerved to avoid a much slower vehicle on the highway. He was killed when his truck overturned and caught fire.

While the truck driver in Morgan's wreck allegedly dozed off -- Mary thinks the bigger issue is out of control speeding on the Turnpike ... and she thinks it's time to lower the limit from 65 to 55.

For now ... Mary's out of luck. A Turnpike Authority manager tells TMZ there are no plans to make any speed or safety changes on the road ... and feels driver error was the sole cause of Morgan's accident.

Maybe they should make all big trucks drive a lot slower there then. They seem to be the danger. Truck drivers seem to fall asleep a lot. Does Walmart force their drivers to drive more than they legally can? I guess another fix would be don't let trucks on the road. Problem solved.

Make truck drivers wear one of those devices that sets off an alarm if you start falling asleep. They are cheap and worn in the ear like a hearing aid. This accident was driver error, lowering the speed limit would not have prevented it.

Lowering the speed limit won't do s***. People will just drive 30 MPH over the speed limit instead of 20MPH.
Just stop going to and living in the toilet known as New Jersey.

Most of the turnpike speed limits are 55 mph.

I'm sorry she lost her son but lowering the speed limit won't stop speeding. The only thing wrong with the turnpike is the exits are too far apart around the area of the accident. It's boring which can make a driver drowsy.

I live not even ten minutes away from this exit on the turnpike and I have to say that it's my opinion that truck drivers need to be better regulated. They hurtle down the turnpike without any regard for speed limits and traffic around them expecting cars to move out of the way. I'm sorry for the lady who lost her son but when I was taught to drive it was by observing the flow of traffic and knowing to keep enough distance between cars to stop safety. It's terrifying driving on ANY major roadway in NJ with trucks who feel like they own the roads and who preform very dangerous maneuvers expecting everyone else to mov out of the way to avoid being crushes

Even a placid 2 lane road is a deathtrap when you have a semi bearing down on you with the driver asleep at the wheel. Next.

Lowering the limit won't do jack. No offense but North Jersey and NYC drivers are the worst. Even if you travel further south on 95, to the Baltimore/DC metro area, they still fly down the highway at 90-100 mph, flashing headlights for you to get out of their way. You can be doing 70-75 in a 65 and feel like you're standing still when they blow past.

Hopefully with the publicity from this accident they will look into safety issues with the turnpike.

Visconti's mom just doesn't want to accept that her son was responsible for his own death. I understand her grief, but it doesn't change the facts of his case.
