Radio Legend

Dead at 82

6/15/2014 8:32 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Casey Kasem Dead
Casey Kasem -- the original voice of the American Top 40 countdown -- died Sunday morning ... TMZ has confirmed.

His daughter Kerri said on Facebook this morning ... her dad was surrounded by family and friends. adding, "Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken."

Casey was suffering from advanced Parkinson's Disease and dementia. His wife Jean Kasem moved him to a convalescent home in Santa Monica a few months ago.

Kasem founded the "AT 40" radio franchise back in 1970 ... and famously hosted the wildly popular show until 2004. He went on to do several spinoff countdown shows until he retired from radio in 2009.

He was also very famous for voicing cartoon voices like Shaggy from "Scooby-Doo" ... and Robin on "Super Friends." He was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1985.

Casey's illness was marked by a bitter war between Jean and Casey's three children from his previous marriage. The kids claimed Jean blocked them from seeing Casey for several months.

Earlier in the week Kerri took her dad off of all life support including nutrition.

Casey was 82.

What a sad thing for his kids to go through. My 82 year old mom passed in Dec. It became are we extending life- or prolong death. Force feeding someone who's in the process of dying is not good. Once my mom was changed to hospice- it was only 4 days. To have to go to court & be told you have to feed/medicate is not helpful at a time that's already horrible. He deserved to die w/ dignity & hopefully his kids can focus on the time they had left w/ him as good at some point. He was an American Icon!

May he rest in peace. I hope they at least put him in a medical coma so he didn't suffer from starvation & pain. His family probably will file lawsuits against each other before he is even buried.

Hope there will be criminal charges against Jean Kasem for dragging critically ill husband on road trip all over the damn place, Arizona & Wash etc, selfishly removing him from doctors' care. She killed him, imo. RIP Casey.

Oh my God people! Get a grip...Casey Kasem is at peace. who are any of you to judge anything that he himself as well as his children and wife have done. we know nothing about the war between his family. Dont judge people until youve walked a mile in their shoes. RIP will be missed terribly missed. My prayers go out to Casye's family and friends.
