Katie Cleary

Play to Become Famous

Triggered Financial Disaster for Husband

6/27/2014 12:50 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Katie Cleary -- the "Deal or No Deal" model whose husband committed suicide Sunday -- was so thirsty for fame she schemed to become a cast member on "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" ... a move that helped drive her husband to financial ruin ... sources close to the couple tell TMZ.

Our sources say Katie was demanding with hubby Andrew Stern, imploring him to help her penetrate the walls of Hollywood celebrity.  Her big plan was to join RHOBH and she executed it by latching on to Taylor Armstrong -- once a star on the show -- and her husband Russell.

We're told Katie dragged Andrew to dinners, parties and other events where the Housewives hung, but her plan didn't work.  Instead her play created a big problem, because Andrew got involved in Russell's investments and lost a bundle.

Andrew hit rock bottom financially and we're told that contributed to his downward spiral that ended Sunday when he shot himself in the head at a firing range.

And one other eerie note ... Russell and his business partner, Alan Schram, both committed suicide.

Why are you guys talking about this so much? This is the first time I have heard of that girl. So now the girl who desperately wanted to be famous, is now becoming famous thanks to her husbands death? Are they sure she didn't shoot him? I don't know, this is the first time I read one of these articles.

Stop blaming her for his suicide. He was an adult man, he made his choice. It seems funny that 3 men who lost their shirts all committed suicide? Follow the money trail, are we sure there isn't something bigger at play?

Stop blaming this woman for his suicide already. There were clearly underlying issues with him. How many of us have gone through bad relationships? Have had financial stresses, setbacks, and bad times? I would say...MOST OF US. She didn't "drag" him to parties. Your spouse accompanies you to social functions. If he didn't want to go, he was a grown man and could have said no. Same with business deals with Russell Armstrong. It is even hard to blame the person who committed suicide for the act, because usually - there are mental issues involved. It is not fair to blame anyone.

Love those shades. Very sexy. With the face of an angel and the body of a goddess, this girl's going to go very far. Truth.

Suicide is one of the most painful ways to die. The act itself is quick, but the lead up time is so full of mental suffering and horrible anguish. I feel very sorry for this man, and if what TMZ says is true, it is terrible that a desire for fame on a perfectly trashy reality show should play any part in his suicide. A very sad outcome for anyone.

The Maharincess of Franistan

If this is true then she should take a good look at herself. Because from where I'm sitting she is a vapid, stupid broad.

I still say he should have took her with him... Or sent her on her way first, and followed soon after.
