Prince, whose full name was Prince Rogers Nelson, was a GRAMMY, Oscar, and Golden Globe winning recording artist who passed away at the age of 57 on April 21, 2016 from an accidental opioid overdose. The superstar was found in an elevator at his Paisley Park mansion in Minnesota. Just days before, Prince had a medical emergency on board a plane, forcing the jet to make an emergency landing in Illinois for him to seek medical attention. He was reportedly battling the flu and returned to the stage the following day. Prince entered the scene in 1978 with the album “For You” and the hits soon followed with “Prince,” “Dirty Mind,” “Controversy,” and “1999.” His memory will forever live on with his extensive musical catalogue featuring such songs as “Little Red Corvette,” “Raspberry Beret,” “Party Like It’s 1999,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and “Purple Rain.” Over the course of his decades-long career, Prince collected seven GRAMMYs and countless other top honors, including a Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2004. In 2007, he headlined one of the most memorable Super Bowl Halftime shows ever. In the mid-90s, Prince felt like a slave to his record company because of the contractual terms. He thought the company owned his name, so in 1993, Prince announced he was changing his name to a “Love Symbol,” which merged the gender symbols for male and female. The media began referring to him as “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince.” When his contract expired in 2000, Prince resumed using his name. Prince was born on June 7, 1958 to John L. Nelson and Mattie Della Shaw. His parents divorced in 1967. Prince was married twice to backup dancer Mayte Garcia (1996-2000) and Manuela Testolini (2001-2006). He had a son with Mayte, named Boy Gregory, but he died at one week old due to a genetic disorder called Pfeiffer syndrome. Mayte wrote about her love affair with the superstar in her memoir, “The Most Beautiful Life: My Life with Prince.” Prince is survived by his sister Tyka Nelson and several half-siblings. The Paisley Park estate and studio has been turned into a museum for fans to tour.
