Gene Hackman’s New Mexico home is so huge, it took a while to find his body after his wife Betsy’s was found, a local fire official tells TMZ ... giving us a detailed rundown of what went down when they arrived on the scene.

Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya tells TMZ paramedics responded to a "man down" call from Gene's address Wednesday with a fire engine and an ambulance, and rushed in through the unlocked front door -- with sheriff's deputies arriving later.

Moya tells us they found Betsy right away, on the floor of a bathroom near the front door. Their team is trained to spot obvious signs of death, and it was clear Betsy had passed -- so no resuscitation efforts were made.

Justin Timberlake is not bringing "SexyBack" tonight ... 'cause he's got a nasty case of the flu and can't perform tonight.

The singer-songwriter posted an apology to his Instagram Thursday evening ... telling fans he was heartbroken, but he needed to cancel the show in Columbus, Ohio because he couldn't even get through soundcheck.

He says it kills him to disappoint his fans and all the members of his team who worked so hard to put the show together ... and, he promises everyone will receive refunds for their tickets.

It'll be a while before we get the full story on Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy, and their dog’s suspicious deaths -- 'cause TMZ has learned that even with the initial autopsy, the final report will take a few more weeks.

Sources tell TMZ that after the autopsy is done by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, it’ll take 4 to 6 weeks for toxicology and other tests to come through before the final report is issued.

Authorities have been super puzzled over their deaths -- making a note of how Gene's front door to his NM property was open when they entered for the search warrant of their house.

Gregg Popovich won't be back on the NBA sidelines anytime soon ... as the three-time coach of the year announced he will miss the rest of the season as he continues to recover from a stroke he suffered in November.

Popovich released a statement minutes ago ... saying interim head coach Mitch Johnson and the staff "have done a wonderful job and the resolve and professionalism the players have, sticking together during a challenging season, has been outstanding."

According to the New York City medical examiner ... Michelle's family has asked the ME not to perform an autopsy on Michelle to determine the cause of death.

The medical examiner tells us that if there were any suspicion of criminality, then an autopsy would automatically be performed ... but, since there isn't, they won't be doing one.

Pro surfer Makai McNamara is currently in a coma after a "freak accident" in Hawaii, according to reports.

The frightening moment happened at the North Shore of Oahu ... where McNamara, 29, was surfing at his usual spot, the Banzai Pipeline -- which is known for being a dangerous location.

McNamara was struck by a large wave during his run ... which knocked him unconscious and sent him headfirst into a reef, fellow surfer Eli Olson told an outlet.
