The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department held a news conference to give an update on the investigation into the deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, this afternoon -- and, it sounds like Gene was dead in the New Mexico home for a week and a half before he was found.

Sheriff Adan Mendoza led the news conference as deputies continue to look into the deaths they labeled "suspicious" in a department application for a search warrant this week.

During the press conference, Mendoza says Hackman's pacemaker shows its last event on February 17 -- indicating that's when it stopped and when he died. Mendoza said autopsies and toxicology reports were pending, but he said both individuals tested negative for carbon monoxide, according to the medical examiner.

Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya tells TMZ paramedics responded to a "man down" call from Gene's address Wednesday with a fire engine and an ambulance, and rushed in through the unlocked front door -- with sheriff's deputies arriving later.

Moya tells us they found Betsy right away, on the floor of a bathroom near the front door. Their team is trained to spot obvious signs of death, and it was clear Betsy had passed -- so no resuscitation efforts were made.

Santa Fe fire officials spoke on "TODAY" Friday, stating that while their meters didn’t detect anything amiss during searches, that doesn’t mean carbon monoxide poisoning is off the table -- especially since the bodies may have been there for days or even weeks.

According to a sheriff's press release, Santa Fe County Animal Control is reportedly working with Hackman’s family to “ensure the safety of the two dogs.”

Gene and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, had three dogs -- one of which was found dead by deputies inside a bathroom closet. The German Shepherd was lying 10-15 feet away from Arakawa, who was also found deceased on the bathroom floor -- with prescription pills scattered nearby.

Qatar Airways is defending its crew after they deposited a deceased passenger next to a couple for the final four hours of a flight from Melbourne, Australia to Doha, Qatar earlier this week.

As you know, the couple -- Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin -- claimed they were not offered new seats after a woman's corpse was covered with a blanket and was placed in their row. Ring said he was simply asked to move over so the woman -- who dropped dead near them -- could occupy his seat.

The man pardoned by President Donald Trump for his January 6 crimes was caught on camera threatening to shoot himself after getting into a heated altercation with a sheriff's deputy who ended up firing several rounds, killing the man.

Check out the video ... the incident went down on January 26 when Matthew Huttle was pulled over by a deputy in Jasper County, Indiana, for going 70 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, according to law enforcement.

The Jasper County Sheriff's deputy gets out of his patrol vehicle and approaches Huttle, who emerges from his SUV. The deputy explains to Huttle that he's a "habitual traffic violator with a suspended license" and is going to be arrested after his speeding infraction.

Sources tell TMZ that after the autopsy is done by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, it’ll take 4 to 6 weeks for toxicology and other tests to come through before the final report is issued.
