Is Finally Over!

5/24/2007 2:10 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

With performances by Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson and BeBe and CeCe Winans, last night Jordin Sparks was crowned the latest "American Idol" on what seemed more like a "Solid Gold" rerun than the finale of the most watched show on television! Nothing says 2007 like ... Bette Midler?!

American Idol Finale
TMZ has the rundown on last night's eight-hour live broadcast:

The finale rambled on longer than a Paula Abdul interview! Something's broken on Paula -- and it ain't her nose!

The "Golden Idol Awards" -- Um ... No! Making fun of an infantile overweight woman dressed like Big Bird and two peculiarly challenged young men does nothing for "Idol's" industry cred ... who knew minstrel shows were making a primetime comeback? Why do producers want to add a crappy awards show to a crappy award show?

Gladys Knight -- She's gotten rid of the Pips -- and all facial expression! Thankfully, the only thing Botox didn't kill was her voice. Girlfriend needs an eyelash/weave wrangler.

Smokey Robinson
-- When did he become "Whisperin' Smokey Robinson?" At least one wide-eyed Jurassic crooner knows what notes he can still hit.

Doug E. Fresh
-- Thank you, "Idol," for transporting us all the way into ... 1985! *pah-chunk foomph-a-foomph*

Tony Bennett
-- Nobody hit the money note last night better than Tony -- who's 80!

Sanjaya/Joe Perry
-- Enough about Sanjy's hair. What the f**k was going on with Joe Perry's ratty bird's nest weave?! You Really Got Me!

Clive Davis -- Since he won't trash Clarkson in public, he'll just rave about Carrie Underwood (aka the un-Kelly) like she cured cancer. And can someone remind him Clay Aiken did NOT win "Idol" -- Ruben Studdard did! Poor Rube! While he pointed out everyone from Chris Daughtry to Jennifer Hudson (what no Carmen Rasmussen?!), Clive forgot to mention the Velvet Teddy Bear himself.

Kelly Clarkson -- "Idol's" prodigal daughter comes home. Love her or hate her (Clive!) she knows how to transform a poetry slam into an "Idol" performance. Metalicious! By the way, how much must it suck when your album sells 10 million copies (more than Saint Carrie), you win 2 Grammys and your songwriting ability is honored by ASCAP -- yet your label Prez still shelves your new album because it isn't "pop" enough?! Was Kat McPhee's non-selling album pop enough for ya, Clive?

Carrie Underwood
-- Country Barbie could get a DUI and flash her hay and she'd still be "Idol's" Patron Saint. The twangy gal can do no wrong ... except when it comes to Beatles songs!

Melinda Doolittle/BeBe and CeCe Winans
-- Hallelujah! Sometimes when you lose, you really win.

Green Day -- Through the magic of television, we were transported out of the Kodak Theater to the regular "Idol" stage and back -- in just under four minutes! How'd they do that?!

Bette Midler
-- Where was Kermie?! Somebody knocked out the wind beneath her wings! Que paso?! The only thing worse than the not-so Divine Miss M's Vegas-bound performance was the rubber S&M bathmat she transmogrified into a skirt! Ya gotta have friends!

Beatles Songs -- Michael Jackson might want to reconsider the worth of the catalog; it was seriously devalued by last night's shrill salute, exemplified by Taylor Hicks' special needs rendition of "A Day in the Life."

Blake Lewis -- Was there ... we think.

Jordin Sparks -- She should sing next to Ruben more often -- she suddenly became a size 2! Oh, by the way, nice how they tossed in at the end that Jordin won. Goodnight everybody!

Over the years people have always put Bette M. songs down! maybe she was trying to change it around a little to try to please people she would have sounded alright if she would have sang the oringal version. Smokey sounded just as good as he use to. Tony Bennett showed that age doesn't make you less of a singer. The only part I didn't care for was the awards. I think that was in bad taste. I don't understand why people say Ruben can't sing , he can he has a very nice sounding voice. both Jordin and Ruben were Great!!

I love American Idol and watch it all the time with my daughter. But I must admit this was the worst show ever. Jordin and Blake sucked with thier singning performances the night before. There were people in the regular auditions that were better than them. I think they need to try some new cities next year. Or else it is going to suck again and again.

If American Idol is determined to keep Paula, at least make her switch seats with Randy. All she does is repeat what Randy says because she has no opinions of her own. If she is first to comment, it will be entertaining to hear her stammer more than usual. A 'judge' is supposed to give honest critiques, not just say meaningless stuff like "You do your own thing every week." What does that mean to anyone? Simon and Randy should be the only judges, or replace Paula with someone who has something intelligent and constructive to say. Paula makes me cringe with her smarmy weirdness and insipid comments. She is totally worthless as a 'judge.'

This show has gotten SOOO tired and so old, it's time to bury it. Not to mention they drag the show out for too friggin long, I don't have the patience to sit and watch it. It's not even a talent contest, it's a friggin popularity contest. If it were truly looking for real talent then the judges would have at least 50% say in the results each week, but they don't. That leaves it up to everyone's friends/family calling in.....or people calling in just to keep the worst train wreck on the show.

Cancel this show already would ya!

I do not watch American Idol at all. However, I do like Kelly, Carrie and songs by the other "idols." The show was entirely too long. I came across it when Kelly was about to sing and thought that she did great. Carrie is a good country singer but that song was wrong for her, my opinion. I think that Clive should be thankful that he has Kelly (no pun intended) on his label and that she has helped make him even richer. And how can you really compare Kelly with Carrie they are two totally different artists and have two totally different careers. Country vs. Pop/Rock. There isn't a comparison, they both do great in their respective music careers. Didn't Ruben take a break after his album came out to get healthy and lose some weight? Anyways, I agree with most of you about the show enough already. It is getting so boring. The "golden idols" must go away forever. I think even Ryan is getting over idol and besides he has like a 10 million dollar contract with E! so he doesn't really need to do idol.

It amazes me that Idol still comes in at #1 every season. I have watched less and less every season only catching Michael Buble's performance this season. Sadly, my aunt JUST discovered Idol and is hooked, so somehow they're pulling in new viewers.
Here are album sales for the Idol contestants:

After watching the 1st and 2nd shows this season and saw the direction the show had taken, I chose not to watch it ever again. Except the finale, to see Taylor Hicks and he was awesome. Kelly Clarkson was good, too. Clive Davis is a SNAKE!! I will never watch AI again--I am DONE!!!

Taylor Hick's A Day in the LIfe was by far the best performance on the entire show. What a voice, what emotion.

Another manipulation by the AI powers that be, like season 1 they pick a power ballad written for a women's voice and make both contestants sing the same song knowing that both Justin and Blake would have difficulties with the song. Might the outcome have been different if Jordin had the rap or beatbox?
All I'm saying is that like season one they wanted two girls in the finals Kelly & Tamyra Gray and now, Jordin & Melinda, when that didn't happen they manipulated the outcome to get the person they wanted.
Watch out Kelly, AI has hand picked your replacement!

These finale's need to be shortened by 1 hour. We don't need guest singers (although Tony Bennet ROCKED). Having former AI contestants is cool. But I wanted to hear the top 12 sing together and they hardly had any airtime. Bette Midler was excruciating. Green Day was flat. Gwen Stefani was boring. Glady Knight was OK and so was Smoky Robinson. Melinda and the Winan's were the best thing on the finale. Next was Ruben and Jordin. They were good.

Taylor rocked the house. I love his song "Heaven Knows" and hopefully the radio stations will get their heads un-wedgied and start playing his music. He has been generally ignored since he won last year and that is a travesty. Taylor is the most unique AI winner and deserves better. I would pay to see him again and again.

Note to AI producers - ditch the stupid awards for the horrid contestants, get rid of excess guest singers and stick to what the audience wants - the American Idol top 12 and the results. Shave an hour off and you'll get better ratings and better television.

The show was good, but Melinda should have won. I've noticed a trend, that the people who should win, don't. Why is that? But I missed the end (TIVO). Not that it mattered.
