Hockey Star

Arrested Over

20 Cent Fight

8/9/2009 1:44 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0809_patrick_cane_getty_bn-1Fighting over money is common -- but does $0.20 even count as money?

Two dimes (or four nickels) was allegedly the cause of a fight between NHL star Patrick Kane and a cab driver in Buffalo, NY. According to the Buffalo News, Kane (along with his cousin) were arrested after they allegedly roughed up a cab driver who couldn't give them the required change.

According to a police report obtained by the paper, the Kane boys paid $15 for a $13.80 cab ride -- but became incensed when the cabbie had the dollar bill, but not the coinage, to make change. The cab driver told police he was punched in the face and head, grabbed by the throat and had his glasses broken during the incident.

Both men were charged with second-degree robbery, a Class C felony, as well as fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services, both Class A misdemeanors. WIVB-TV says Kane has pled not guilty.

Kane plays for the Chicago Blackhawks but grew up in Buffalo and was in town to announce the funding of a local hockey rink.

This story is so bogus. Patrick Kane is a decent kid why would a future Stanley Cup winner go and rough up a cabby for $0.20 cents? Extortion much?

Well there is no question cabbies can nickel and dime you and want some kind of tip. It can be annoying, but if they got you to point a to point b safely then dont expect coins as change. However, if the cabbie drives like a total nut job, take a photo of his speedometer then tell him to drive the speed limit or you will call the police and his cab company. I had to do this once because this idiot was driving 80 mph in a 55 zone. After I took the photo and told him that, he did slow down and kept it under 60 mph the rest of the way. The fare was 14.95 and he got 15.00!

They paid him-he wanted bigger tip- so he locked them in - then all hell broke loose

"One guy pays and the other guy grabs me by the throat. Patrick Kane. Turns out to be a hockey player. I didn't know who they were," the 62-year-old cabdriver, identified only as "J.R.," told WIVB television in Buffalo. The cabdriver had initially locked the doors and refused to let the men out until they paid, owing to bad experiences with "college kids," he said."

1- he 'initially had locked the door' but they had already paid him in full that $15

2- he admits to having problems with past customers

3- young 'college kids' as he says had been causing him problems

4- no wonder he didn't want his name out and those 'college kids' immediately contacting the media.

5- but since he was having these problems with such types, why didn't he just drive his cab in the suburbs taking housewives shopping and back or at the hospitals or airports or other places LESS rowdy than drinking bars at 4am on sunday morning where you usually pick up drunks?

6- drunks you and your 'witness' are trying to rob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but a young nhl player or college age youths are just a bit too much for the old man to handle.

1- he 'initially had locked the doors' but they had already paid him in full that $15 - could you blame anyone who was being screwed around or got poor service for not wanting to tip a single penny?

2- the after midnight cab driver admits to having problems with past customers

3- young 'college kids' as he says had been causing him problems in the past - who he obviously also locked in. sounds like a kidnapping charge is due here.

The Blackhawks should suspend this thug until the courts make a decision in the lawsuit.

What a cheap a**h**e Kane is. He should have given the driver a $20.00 bill minimum and told him to keep the change. That is what person with class and social skills would do. But I guess you don't need class or social skills if you are a sports figure earning big bucks for the league.

Lawyer for Buffalo cabbie: This has been 'blown out of proportion'
August 10, 2009

The lawyer for the Buffalo cab driver who alleges Blackhawks star Patrick Kane was involved in a robbery and assault on him Sunday morning said the incident has been "blown out of proportion."

Kane, 20, and his cousin, James Kane, 21, are alleged to have punched cab driver Jan Radecki and taken back money they had given him after the driver told them he didn't have 20 cents in coins to give them change, according to the Buffalo police report.

The report said the fare was $13.80 and the two Kanes had paid the driver $15. Radecki told the Tribune Sunday, "They broke my glasses, they ripped my clothes ... all over 20 cents."

Radecki's lawyer, Andrew LoTempio, appeared on WGN-AM 720 this morning (full audio here) and seemed to downplay the incident.

"It's pretty much been blown out of proportion," LoTempio told WGN. "It's a dispute over the cab fee and unfortunately Mr. Radecki didn't recognize Mr. Kane and just thought they were a couple of college kids.

"Some of the cab drivers here have a policy of not unlocking the doors until they get paid because they get beat on their fees by the college kids and that just kind of blew up."

Kane and his relative were arrested about 5 a.m. after leaving Chippewa Street, an area in Buffalo known for its nightlife. The police report said the Kanes were picked up by Radecki while downtown around 4 a.m. After driving them to Eastwood Place, a residential street a few miles away, the altercation occurred and a witness called police.

The Kanes were charged with second-degree robbery, a Class C felony, and fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services, both Class A misdemeanors.

LoTempio added that he believed the charges would "absolutely not" rise to the level of a felony, calling it a "regular kid incident." The lawyer also said, "I think we should be able to work things out" with Kane.

They punched a 61 year old cab driver repeatedly for not unlocking the doors until he was paid, unacceptable. If they would have just let him keep the change, or forgot about 20 cents, doors wouldve been unlocked. No court in their right mind is gonna file a kidnapping charge against him you moron. The reason lawyer is being so kind, is cos he wants a big settlement for his client.

A memory of Blackhawks' Kane and a cab driver
The Sunday morning arrest of Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane for allegedly attacking and robbing a Buffalo cab driver brought back a memory I have of another encounter between Kane and a cab driver.

First, a brief recap of what we know about Sunday's incident: Kane, 20, and his cousin, James Kane, 21, were arrested and face several charges, including robbery, after an altercation with a cab driver over a fare. The driver, Jan Radecki, said the Kanes attacked him after he couldn't produce 20 cents of the change from a $13.80 fare after they paid him $15. Radecki alleges the Kanes beat him and took their money back. Reports today indicate the situation might have escalated after Radecki refused to unlock the doors of the cab until he had been paid. That's a common practice with some drivers to ensure passengers don't run off without paying.

I'm getting a number of e-mails and seeing a lot of comments from people who are saying Kane, who makes millions of dollars playing hockey, shouldn't have been so cheap and that as a professional athlete he doesn't respect the working man.

Now, back to that memory I mentioned.

During Kane's rookie season in 2007, the then 18-year-old was with his Hawks teammates in Detroit for a game against the Red Wings. I was staying in the same hotel as the team and a few hours before game time jumped into a cab and asked the driver to take me to Joe Louis Arena. After hearing my destination, the driver told me he'd just had a Hawks player in the cab and mentioned what a great guy the player was and that he had given the driver $50 for a $10 cab ride.

He then showed me the autograph the player had given him and it read: "Show me the money! (signed) Patrick Kane"

Irony aside, this certainly doesn't absolve Kane of any wrong-doing in Sunday's incident, but in my mind should help put to rest the notion that the altercation was because Kane, who as a rookie wasn't yet making millions of dollars but still gave the driver in Detroit a $40 tip, was too cheap to pay Radecki or tip him or that Kane disrespects working men and women such as cab drivers.

Obviously, either Kane's attitude toward cab drivers has changed, or something else happened on that street in the wee hours in Buffalo and until Kane speaks publicly about it (he hasn't returned several messages I've left) we won't know his side of things.
