Sean Penn

Cops Plea in Criminal Case

5/12/2010 2:50 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned ... Sean Penn -- who was charged with battery in connection with a paparazzi run-in last October -- has just copped a plea in his criminal case.

Penn -- who was charged with misdemeanor vandalism and battery by L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich -- pled no contest this AM to one count of vandalism.  The battery charge was dismissed.

Penn was placed on 36 months probation and ordered to perform 300 hours of community service.  The judge said Penn's work for his Haitian relief organization will count toward his 300 hours, but his prior volunteer work won't count -- it's 300 hours going forward.

Penn was also ordered to perform 36 hours of anger management, which can be done through a private therapist.

If Penn successfully completes his probation his vandalism conviction will turn into a disturbing the peace conviction -- a lesser offense.

But there's more.  Penn must stay 100 yards away from the victim.  A restitution hearing over the pap's camera and medical bills is set for July 8.

While I commend him on his charity work in Haiti, his community service sentence should be carried out in THIS country....there are plenty of roads and public parks here that need to be cleaned. Plenty of public bathrooms that need to be scrubbed. This guy is a has-been, no talent, BULLY and he needs to be brought back to this country to do his time.

Despite Penn hating America (the land of the free that he lives in) and loving all the other countries that hate America (in which he does not live in)... I hate to say it, but I think all charges should have been dropped. The paps should leave these stars alone. The paps basically provoke the stars by sticking cams in their faces 24/7 and most of the time asking them retarded questions. When the stars 'take the bait' and get fed up by the cams and do 'something', they end up having to apologize and paying penalties. Professional paps should have to stay away from celebs 24 hours a day. The stars should hire people to take pix of the paps and post their fat asses on a website.

Does his time holding hands with his girlfriend, Hugo Chavez, count?

Making him stay 100 yards from the victim is no deterrent. He'll be belting all of them if that's his punishment

I feel for celebs when they're hunted like dogs and can't get any privacy, but then again - the career they chose requires them to be in the public eye.

Professor Obvious

Sean Penn is a total tool. He has zero impulse control. He is extremely easy to bait but he always singles out the puniest among the paps for his violence, he knows that if he tried his little stunts on anybody bigger, he would get his clock cleaned.
