'Storm Chasers' Star Committed Suicide

11/4/2010 2:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

"Storm Chasers" just revealed one of its stars, Matt Hughes, died earlier this year -- and TMZ has learned his death was a suicide -- the result of a hanging.

Matt Hughes Storm Chaser death
At the end of last night's episode of the Discovery reality show viewers were told Hughes died in May due to complications from a fatal injury at his home in Kansas.

TMZ confirmed with Valley Center PD ... on May 14 they responded to a suicide call at Hughes' home.  According to the police report, officers concluded Matt, who was still breathing, was drinking before the suicide attempt.

We're told Matt was taken to a local hospital -- but passed away 13 days later.  The Medical Examiner's report lists "Hanging" as the cause of death.

None of you knew this man! Comments by tyler, Midnight toker, Ree (especially Ree's heartless know it all comment), were perhaps a big factor in the misery weighing down this man. Everywhere you look, people show no kindness, no understanding, not even a tiny effort of trying to understand. This world is full of politicians and socialites who feel they know best because they have money and influence - or because they are so devout in their religious teachings that brainwashed them. Unable to think outside the box, the world can be a cruel and horrible place to some who just want to belong, have friends, be happy. Petty as it is, I often hope that the Ree's and tokers and millions of other dum*as*es find themselves suffering at the very least as much as this poor man did, for at least the same amount of time - since it is obvious you are incapable of simple understanding/compassion for his sufferings in life. You say it is selfish of him to remove himself from this world, where perhaps he felt of no value, perhaps he felt he was causing more harm than good. Maybe he felt he was a bad father, bad husband, so to him it may have been a selfless act. If only things like Ree could see that the REEs of the world are in fact the things with nothing to contribute of worth, who only spread negativity and bad energy. Maybe if the REEs were to take themselves out of the equation, life for all the rest of us would be better. Just common sense and by definition of selfish, a REE keeping itself alive is the selfish act. A Ree making its comments without regards to its impact is a selfish act. Be selfless for once REE, I am sure the world would be a better place without you.

Nice TMZ for not being sensitive at all, all you care about is your exclusive news crap, you have no ethics at all. You just post it like its any other story, I wish I could see the face of the person who posted this story, you are doing nothing for society. I was a friend and a star on the show and his family deserves better than you exploiting Matt.

He was married? And a homosexual?, no wonder why he decided to take his own life. He was depressed? I wonder why, how can an individual be both straight, gay have a wife and children.

God has a certain place for these lost souls, and this guy was destined to accept his fate.

I was very sad to learn that one on the stars of this series had passed away. I feel for his family, friends and children. Matt in the series seemed to be a happy guy. It's sad that his life ended the way it did.

I have to say that it is appauling what some people wrote here. no matter what one feels about suicide, someone losing their life is nothing to celebrate. no matter how it was lost.

Very sad Matt looked so happy. No-one can judge Matt must have been suffering from depression. You dont just want to kill yourself on a whim he must have been thinking about it for a while. RIP Matt I know your soul is at peace. I feel very sad for his wife and two children.
