Rampage:

Yes, Steven Seagal is Training My Opponent

11/18/2010 2:32 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Rampage Jackson says he's well aware that the guy he's set to fight on Saturday, Lyoto Machida, has a brand new trainer in his corner -- a trainer who once took down an entire war ship ... and then torpedoed his own career.

Yes, for some reason ... Machida enlisted the services of Steven Seagal -- star of such cinematic classics as, "Hard to Kill," "Out For a Kill, "Driven to Kill" and "Kill Switch."

Footage of Seagal training Machida has surfaced on the web -- which we've titled, "Career Kill."

If you haven't seen it yet ... you're missing out.

FYI -- Rampage is set to take on Seagal's protege at UFC 123 this Saturday night.

The Truth

I'll be honest here...to any of you guys ripping on Seagal because of his age or his physique, the guy could literally snap your neck like a twig in all of about 5 seconds, and that's the reality of the situation. Now that we've established that fact, I can't wait for UFC on Saturday...

Some of you have no idea. Steven Seagal has not just a black belt in one but 4 martial arts. He has black belts in Aikido, karate, judo, and kendo. He aslo became the first westerner to open a martial arts school in japan in a age where if you was white teaching fighting of those styles was either concidered taboo for someone not asian to know them, but wrong.

Good riddance!

Steven may be old, heavy, and packing poundage, but he is still very fast and is still respected around the world for his tactics and knowledge. People that think body shape, age, and endurance are the only important factors to being effective would probably wake up with several broken bones, wondering what just happened after facing such a person.

Segal's style is more of a combat style of Akido, but it can be very effective in real world application. How effective it is in a controlled cage setting remains to be seen. It stresses using the opponent's movement and actions against them, while using a variety of rapid and often devastating strikes and locks to get the job done. Get in, get out, do not linger. It also stresses being elusive and not playing into the opponent's game plan. Use what the opponent gives you and use it against them. This might or might not work for Machida, as his style is similar in its' use of distraction, speed, and angles. It really depends on Machida's ability to absorb this information or not. It also depends, of course, on Jackson's abilities and fitness too. If Jackson can nullify the distractions and get his hands on Machida and use his power, it can be a good night for Jackson. If Machida can avoid Jackson, confuse and evade him until he is ready, it's a good night for Machida.

I like and respect both fighters for their vastly different skills and abilities. It's the classic power brawler vs. skilled and technical elusive opponent. Rampage has years of experience facing the absolute elite of the sport and Machida is an up and comer to the sport with and excellent and unusual skill set. I am going to lean in Machida's direction in this fight, but I would not be surprised or upset to see Rampage Jackson win.

This is high comedy. Firstly, Segal is a proven fraud called out over a decade ago by the 12 top competitive martial artists at that time - guys like Dennis Alexio and Don Wilson -search Black Belt magazine for "Dirty Dozen" and see for yourself.
Second, Segal's history is almost all bs - he was Mike Ovitz's Aikido teacher and wangled it into a movie career. 3rd, "Judo Gene" LaBelle, who was in his 70s at the time, choked Segal out on a set after Segal ran his mouth about how he couldn't be choked out years ago. No contest, I know guys who were there Segal went down and out in seconds.

I've been in MA and MMA all my life - more than 35 years and no losses in competition, and I'll be the first to tell you I don't know **** compared to Machida or any top current fighter, yet what I *clearly* see on that video is a guy with no practical knowledge of MMA fighting talking to someone who probably doesn't understand a word of what he's saying but knows he's a movie star and is giving him the benefit of the doubt. Sure, you want to be HERE, behind his shoulder, well ****in' duh, it's called taking your opponent's back and the odds of doing so as in that 2-step sparring is zero in the octagon. And yeah, kick your opponent in the ribs while he's down, WRONG as you cannot kick a downed opponent. Punch him with wild combinations to the throat, WRONG again, illegal. This video is a joke and surely Segal arranged it for publicity, but he isn't trainng anyone by a long shot. And, for the record, I or any of 20 guys I know could tap Segal in under a minute and I'll do it anytime anywhere and on video for YouTube if you can set it up!

Peace,

Mike V.

Mike V. I do not doubt what you know, but you can kick a downed opponent, just not in the head. I was surprised to see you say that. No disrespect meant, just pointing something out.

Man, the dude pulls 3-4/yr from those crappy movies, has built schools/orphanages or some crap like that in poor countries with that money, kinda-sorta helps make his community a better place to live & trains people/cops to defend themselves...while listening to d* bags who've done nothing make fun of him...If his life/career make him a loser, think of what that makes most of you including the writer. This is your great contribution to society. Yay.

In any case, he is a master. That fat bastard could f* you up, No, he can't defeat a warship filled with terrorists, but he could sure snap your wrist/arm/neck in a matter of seconds. The Dragon looked to him for the same reason the best fighter in the world, Andrson "The Spider" Silva did ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYeR8koQWbk&feature=related ) ...they don't read TMZ.

Seagal has claimed a lot of BS, things like working with the CIA, having connections in the mafia, or being descended from a Buddha were some of his tall tales. You take away the BS though, and you look at the facts, and it is still impressive what he has accomplished.

Seagal probably deserved Gene's attitude adjustment for being so full of **** and beating up stunt guys. Although LeBell is a sadist ******* in his own right, so who knows. You can say Seagal is stupid for letting a Judo master like Lebell put him in a chokehold, thinking he could get out or resist, but let's be honest, who wouldn't go down and hard if they put themself in that situation?

Also, I would agree Seagal isn't particularily well suited to MMA, however there are some martial arts he knows very well. Since MMA is about incorporating different styles, it would be stupid and short-sighted to get all caught up on what seems to be working now and ignoring growth and incorporation of new techniques and approaches. Lyoto himself is a demonstration of how a style thought to be ineffective in MMA like his shotokan karate can actually be used to great effect if applied correctly.

Also, whether the "dirty dozen" or the Mike V. 20 could kick his ass now or on his prime really are not the issue at hand, as a trainer we are talking about technique and knowledge.
