'Make-A-Wish' Kid to Barefoot C: Don't Call Us ...

3/30/2011 2:35 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten just learned a hard lesson ... late is not always better than never ... because she just got blown off by the family of a "Make-a-Wish" boy.

Barefoot Contessa

You'll recall ... Enzo -- a 6-year-old with cancer -- wanted to cook a meal with Ina, but she couldn't find the time.

After TMZ broke the story, Ina took lots of heat.  So Monday night she called Enzo's family and offered for them to come to the Food Network for a cookout.

Enzo's dad Adrian tells us ... the ship has sailed:  "I don't want to put my son through all these emotions.  We're better off just leaving everything the way it is."

As TMZ previously reported -- Enzo's new wish to swim with dolphins is already in the works, and Adrian tells us it will be fulfilled in August.

She may have a great cooking show, but in the end it's only a cooking show. She could have made time! I won't be watching her show anymore.

Some people on here are just as heartless as Ina. I hope and pray that you never have to deal with anything like this family is dealing with!!
Remember people you get what you give!

She should be ashamed of herself. What needs to happen is that she should fall to her knees and ask for forgiveness of that family. She doesn't have time....looks like she has time to eat. What kind of role model is she? She nothing until Food Network made her into something. I will never watch her show again. She is the DEVIL!

@#2/#9 - these celebrities (i.e. the barefoot contessa) commit to donating their time to this charity. So if they're unable to do so, because they have 'scheduling-conflicts' then that is a legit reason, but to have your request denied twice, that tells me (at least someone with rational thinking) that she is too busy with her show, personal life, etc., et-al., to commit any time to this charity and she needs to remove herself from it. Period. If you sign-on to a charity you are committing whatever time and resources you have at your disposal to accommodate these kinds of requests.
I have donated to this charity, but if this is what I can expect from these 'so-called' celeb's with too much money and time on their hands, than my donation dollar is better spent elsewhere!
My sincere hope is that Make-A-Wish kindly asks Ina Garten to remove herself as a celeb from their charity and spend her resource time elsewhere, a charity where not giving time just money fits her better. This is not the last we have heard from this story. MAW is going to have to either support her or ask her to remove herself over this public relations nightmare!

Herpies Fully Loaded - The Sequel

Ina had one year to squeeze in one freakin' hour for this kid and Orca just couldn't spare one measly hour for a kid with cancer. That's all you need to know. Any thing else beyond this means jack.

I have some friends in Nebraska who watch the Food Network all day long. They will however turn the TV off when Ina's show comes on.

I cannot believe that anyone would wish cancer on a TV chef for turning down a charity request. Do you think everyone who walks by a homeless person without giving a dollar should get cancer? Everone who fails to help needy kids at Christmas by giving to the Salvation Army should get cancer? Really??? What an awful, mean, petty society we have become if that is what people believe.

Every person has the right to decide when and how they want to give to charity. It appears that Ina Garten does a lot for charities - the charities she selects and wants to support. She is in no way obligated to support Make-A-Wish. And clearly most of you haven't paid attention to the details when you talk about the "last wish" of a "dying child." Yes, Enzo is very sick but his mother has made clear he is not dying. I feel for this family and their very sick child, but they have been completely wrong in the way they have publicized this issue. Celebrities are going to think long and hard before supporting Make a Wish in the future - no one wants to be held up to this kind of bad press if they have a scheduling conflict. And most celebrities have scheduling conflicts - the success rate in requests to celebrities for these types of organizations is something less than 5%. So give Ina a break - your favorite celebrity has probably turned down this charity in the past, too.
