Chris Brown & Rihanna

In BET Awards Screw-Up

6/27/2011 5:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Wanna see a REALLY, REALLY awkward moment at the BET Awards??? Look no further ...

0627_bet_awards_video
Some "lucky" BET viewers were chosen to present the viewer's choice award at the show last night ... but there was a HUGE mistake ... because someone put the wrong name on the teleprompter.

So the lucky fan read the winner as "Chris Brown" ... but quickly recanted and said, "I'm sorry, the winner is Rihanna."  But that wasn't the case either ...

Despite the fact that Rihanna's name appeared on the video screen as the winner ... one of the presenters chimed in for a THIRD time and announced Drake as the winner!!! Drake then appeared on stage to collect his trophy.

Drake gave a short speech and described the whole thing as awkward. Understatement.

After the awards, a BET rep announced that Brown was the correct winner -- and chalked the whole thing up to a "human error" on the part of BET producers.

Wow... I can't believe half these comments. First lets address the "Our country" comment. Unless your Native American, this is not "Your country". Secondly, "WET" How stupid can one be. I mean really. So what BET is a channel that caters to black people. Doesn't the CMT cater to white people? Doesn't Telemundo cater to Latinos? But I digress, I'm still stuck on "Our Country"

BET actually hires an all WHITE production company who bring the same all white crew they do to all tbe awards they produce.
So blame it on the white people.

Americans seem to make ignorant and racist comments without a valid reason. It does seem like 90% of mainstream television is geared toward white people. Other minorities take what's left. White people run Hollywood so it's not a surprise. The roles for black people are often demeaning although it's gotten better. We recently got BET included with our cable package and I must say it's just as bad as regular TV with boring shows and repeats. We hardly watch.
Here in Canada we have aboriginal (Native Canadian) television, Latin channel, Filipino Channel and even programming for Hindu and Muslim people. It's no big deal. We watch some of these channels as mainstream television isn't very good. Variety is the spice of life. Seriously, you folks need to grow up already. You're always bitching about something or the other.

An Award show that give awards to people that are only black?

How racist can a show be?

What if there was a WET award show?

I guess Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton would come out of their coffins and get ready for the cameras!

If I'm not mistaken Justin Bieber was nominated for an award last year.

Anyone who is saying that minorities are properly represented in television (especially the big networks) and other media is lying to themself. Lets face it, while their are some minorities on shows media sees white as neatrual. I'm not throwing out the race card it's just a fact and if everyone would stop thinking that people are throwing the race card and just stop and actually pay attention to the things you see on your television you may realize this. But if you're not African American, Hispanic, Asian, or any other minority you haven't walked in our shoes so for some of you, not all, you may be a little blind to what's right in front of you. I'm not saying shows like Gossip Girl are a bad thing. I love Gossip Girl. There are a thousands of channels that you can watch. What's wrong with having television channels that embrace certain cultures, but not excluding. Most of the comments are stating that the big networks are not excluding blacks because they have black actors. Well the last time I checked, The Game, the #1 show on BET has a white actress staring on it, but no one has mentioned it. And I also don't see anything wrong with having awards shows for minorities. Although the big awards shows may not exclude minorites, how many have won in the big categories?

BET is owned by Viacom/big business/rich white folks, so people should be slow to make judgemental comments before they know the facts. Then again, when have the facts ever stopped a racist before.

@JustAGuy and as far as racism goes...keep your comments to yourself look at statistics, whites are no longer the dominant race any more neither are they the greater population of the US lets stay in the 21ST century and unite as one bc at the end of the day when we all bleed our blood is RED not black blue white and green you buffoons

After reading about a hundred tweets and articles on this VC award mess, I'm of the opinion that BET DID do this for a publicity stunt, and the chick was in on the game. Watch the video closely - its a very good acting job - and she is basking in the publicity, tweeting about being a trending name and having so many new followers and calling radio stations this morning. And 10 says ago she tweeted that CB was in for a 'rude awakening' if he got Viewers Choice. BET must have known the winner was Chris - probably by a landslide- and Rihanna probably got fewer votes that Nicki Minaj. But yes BET - more dramatic to say RIHANNA. And have her music ready and Drake ready to accept. I wonder if Drake was in on it. Who can you trust in this biz? Proud of Chris for not making ANY mention of it (maybe HE was in on it too - in exchange for all those awards from BET). All about the money

"white girl, but if someone were to call them "black girl" it would be holy hell and I would get written up. I don't ever recall ABC, NBC, or CBS claiming to be white television. And black actors are also honored at the Academy awards, Golden Globes and so on. Name me one award show or station that specifically states they cater to the white population only. You can't because there isn't one!! "

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING CALLED A "WHITE GIRL". THERE IS NOTHING DEROGATORY ABOUT IT. DON'T TRY TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING. NBC, ABC AND CBS DON'T HAVE TO "CLAIM" ANYTHING. JUST LOOK AT THEIR LINE-UP OF PROGRAMMING. THERE IS VERY LITTLE REPRESENTATION, IF ANY BLACKS OR SHOWS ABOUT BLACK FAMILIES ON THESE NETWORKS. THIS IS THE REASON WHY BET WAS NEEDED. AS FOR THE ACADEMY AWARDS, THEY HAVE GIVEN AWARDS TO BLACK ACTORS OF LATE, BUT STILL VERY FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. IT IS WHAT IT IS, BUT DON'T TRY TO MAKE IT OUT LIKE IT'S FAIR OR EQUAL.

Being offended that there's a BET is as silly as a man being offended there's a Lifetime channel for women.
