Jay Leno Sued

Is This Some Kind of Sikh Joke?

1/24/2012 3:30 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

NO ONE mocks the Sikh religion and gets away with it ... not even Jay Leno -- at least that's the sentiment behind a new lawsuit, filed by one angry Sikh follower ... in Bakersfield, CA.

It's all over a recent segment on "The Tonight Show" (above) -- in which Jay pokes fun at the homes of several GOP candidates. We'll spare you, but the punchline is that Mitt Romney -- a famously wealthy businessman -- spends his summers in a solid gold palace.

As an illustration, Jay pulled up a photo of India's Harmandir Sahib -- aka the Golden Temple of Amritsar -- one of the most sacred buildings in the world to the Sikh people.

There's been a lot of outrage among Sikhs over the clip -- but one man in California named Dr. Randeep Dhillon took his religious fervor one step further ... filing a libel lawsuit against the late night host, claiming Leno is responsible for encouraging hatred and ridicule of his religion.

According to Randeep, the Romney joke "falsely portrays the holiest place in the Sikh religion as a vacation resort owned by a non-Sikh" ... THE HORROR.

Randeep is suing for general and punitive damages. A rep for NBC had no comment.

So is TMZ gonna get sued for saying its a "Sikh joke"?

What a big deal in that joke? Jay did not degrade any religion here. The temple is NOT situated in Lake Winnipesaukee. This is another money grab by this Indian.

I'm a Sikh and I didn't find Jay Leno's joke offensive. The majority of Sikhs who saw the clip were not offended...coverage on this topic has been blown way out of proportion...and Dr. Dhillon's lawsuit? Asinine.

If this guy hadn't filed this frivolous lawsuit, no one but the Sikhs would even have known what building Jay was showing in first place.

Had this guy not gone and filed this completely frivolous lawsuit, no one but the Sikhs would even have known what building Jay was showing.

Remember what happened to Salmon Rushdie? They don't believe in free speech. These people are stone crazy nuts.

are you kidding me

I'm sikh and I don't think that was offensive at all. I think the lawsuit is ridiculous.
But what I find offensive is the comments by you very ignorant people. You guys take one man, and generalize his behaviour as being indicative of a whole culture. i.e., "sikhs have no sense of humour."

And I'm not sure why muslims and indians are being compared, totally different religions:S Indians and muslims have a history of bad blood between them and for many years now and I wouldn't ever think of saying some of the things you folks are saying against them. Just because muslim extremists were behind the 9/11 attacks, you cannot generalize this to all is VERYYY ignorant to do so.

@ Sienna Sacha How do you know Randeep wasn't born in this country?

The amount of ignorance and jsut plain stupidity I see coming from the US wrt to religion, gay rights etc., astounds me!

What a joke! Jay Leno can say what he wants to! Just because your sham of a religion was at the butt end of a joke does not mean anything! The 1st amendment reads "Freedom of Speech" not " Freedom from being offended " STFU and go back and pray to your false god!!!!

Get over it, towel-head!
The right to 'mock' public figures and organizations for the sake of satire is part of the freedom of speech we enjoy here in America!

I'm Sikh and i think this is a joke. The guys a comedian all his jokes are gonna target someone, and he doesn't even say anything racist or degrading about the temple. People need to learn how to take a joke, this is embarrassing.
PS. we don't car bomb, were Sikhs not Muslims
