breaking news

World-renowned hair stylist and fashion icon Vidal Sassoon has died.

According to reports, Sassoon passed away today from an unspecified illness at his home on Mulholland Drive in Hollywood. His family was by his side.

Vidal is credited with creating the famous haircut called the "bob."

Vidal was reportedly diagnosed with leukemia in 2009. It's unclear what role the cancer played in his death.

The hair icon was married four times -- most recently to Rhonda Sassoon in 1992, who stayed with him until his death. He is also survived by three children. Vidal was 84.

Vidal seemed pretty healthy right up until the end -- in fact, we spoke to him just last week ... and he gave us some pretty useful hair tips.

the BOB was a hair cut worn in the 1920's. vidal sasoon revolutionized the BOB by making it asymetrical.

iconic and revolutionary
2 best words to describe Vidal Sassoon and what he did in styling and the hair care industry
his cuts defined the 60's and he elevated the art and level of cutting to a whole new level
what a fantastic contribution
plus I have never heard anything negative about him over all of these years
you can not say that about too many famous people
sympathies to his family and closest friends

I did not know that he created the "bob." Rest in peace, Vidal.

Sassoon did not create the Bob, a hairstyle that is traced back to ANCIENT EGYPT. And Sassoon did not cut the famous Clara Bow, or designer Coco Chanel's hair-- both women famous for their bob cuts in the 1920's! What Sassoon did was bring the cut back, popularize it, and show other stylists how to cut it in a modern way.

It's hard to believe that Vidal Sassoon was 84 and has died because his influence is still felt in the world of hair.

not to take anything away from his wonderful legacy, but he most certainly did not invent the bob haircut. it's been around for well over 100 years, and was a favourite of the early movie stars, such as Louise Brooks, before films even had sound! he was old, but he wasn't that old, lol.
