Johnny Tapia Death

Wife Suspects

Illegal Drug Use

5/30/2012 3:05 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

Former boxing champ Johnny Tapia's wife believes her husband used illegal narcotics in the week before his death -- this according to law enforcement.

TMZ has obtained a copy of the police report taken after Johnny's body was found in his New Mexico home this past weekend -- and according to the document, Teresa's suspicions stem from Johnny's longstanding drug problems. Teresa said she had no evidence to back it up.

Police found no proof of illegal drugs in the home, but did come across a locked safe filled with prescription meds -- including Hydrocodone (generic Vicodin) and Quetiapine (a drug used to treat schizophrenia).

Cops say they also found a Hydrocodone pill by Johnny's body.

Family members told police Johnny had been complaining of stomach problems in the hours before his death -- which might explain the Pepto Bismol cops also found on the scene.

Johnny's autopsy was completed yesterday. Results are expected in a couple weeks.

She "suspects" illegal drug use? I think she would pretty much know for sure, would you?

"she had no evidence to back it up."? how about the narcotics in the safe and next to his body? That might be a start.

Hmmmm... Complained of stomach pain... hydrocodone??? Could be a ruptured intestine from a severe attack of diverticulosis.

Hydrocodone gives you stomach problems. And makes you sleepy. Why would anyone want to abuse it or become addicted to it?

Despite a troubled life this man had amazing talent and heart. It saddens me that despite his troubles that the work he has put into the gym for the community to help kids and the most biggest heart just don't get recognized. You see and hear of Olympians, Basketball and Football players who also have additctions and it is sad that kids, parents, etc don't realize that all these casual or occasional users can easily take complete control of your life and destroy everthing you have, family, carreers, lifes etc. This man was a amazing talented boxer. One that took many hits, so, for one to assume that this death is caused by a OD is sad. I certainly hope it isn't so. His death could have been caused by head injury etc. He opened a gym in the community to help kids and his community, always giving to homeless. Did you know that this man was known to bring homeless home and feed them? Did you know this man would pay for hotel rooms so people would not freeze during the winter? Did you know this man would have a jam packed audience who supported him? Did you know this man would see you in the grocery store and talk your ear off and greet you with the biggest smile? NM lost a amazing fighter and a man who despite a troubled childhood, despite his addictions with trying to deal with his childhood , made a amazing and I mean amazing boxer. It was a honor to meet you and to see you in the ring many times. NM will never forget you, nor will the many men who lost against you in the ring. Find peace my brother and may you be reunited with your mother...
