Charlie Sheen's former assistant -- the man many claim was behind Charlie's drug binge last year -- was found dead, and TMZ has learned cops found a pharmacy full of drugs.

Rick Calamaro, who was in and out of Charlie's life for years, was found dead in his L.A. apartment yesterday, although it appears he was dead for several days.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... cops found "numerous pain medications and an open bottle of alcohol."

Rick was a club promoter who knew Charlie decades ago and some believe he supplied Sheen with drugs over the years.

Rick -- whom many Charlie insiders blamed for the actor's craziness in 2011 -- was with Charlie on the trip where Charlie trashed his room at The Plaza Hotel during a dispute with Capri Anderson.

Rick's cause of death has not been determined.

They are two sick men that were enabling each other. Both have brain damage from drugs and didn't give their brains at least a year to heal. Maybe this will be a wake up call to Charlie. Maybe this was the only way that this man would leave Charlies life. but it is terribly sad when someone has to depend on drugs and alcohol to feel normal or escape bad feelings. I look at this situation with compassion not judgement.

btw We are all going to die one day and face judgement so some of you people should have compassion. But I do understand the anger some may feel towards this man because it sounds like he was the supplier. I have a lot of anger towards people that were supplying my boyfriend with drugs and enabling him. But they are all sick and cannot think straight.
