President Barack Obama has offended the bayonet community ... TMZ has learned.

TMZ spoke with multiple people in the bayonet industry who tell us they were shocked and even offended when Obama brought up the weapon during last night's debate.

FYI -- Obama was going after Romney when he said, "You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed."

According to the official U.S. Marine Corps website, every Marine is STILL required to complete a bayonet training program ... because "the weapon becomes just as effective [as a rifle] in close combat situations."

We spoke with Dan Riker from Bayonet Inc. -- a leading military surplus outlet that specializes in bayonets -- who tells us he believes Obama's comment was "ignorant ... because our soldiers still use bayonets."

He adds, “[Bayonets] are still distributed to the military all the time -- he should get educated on it”

For the record, Riker says he won't be voting for Obama ... "and I didn't vote for him last election either."

This is rdidculous, President was simply making a comparison, the statement simply meant that we have become more advanced in technology that we don't need as many ships. Deal with it. He no wise said bayonets was not neeed

Makes sense to me...he said fewer...not completely. And this is true, the nature of the beast has changed.

The Marines still use bayonets, but the Army no longer requires bayonet training....thus proving POTUS's point that they are used LESS THAN THEY USED TO BE !!!! He never said they are obsolete. For bayonet manufacturers, they ain't too sharp on the obvious. Never bring a bayonet to a gun fight boys

Obama won in 2008 without Riker's vote and he will do it again in 2012. Go Obama. We love you.

There were 10 million soldiers killed in WW1 plus the troop that were lucky to live thru it. Most soldiers had bayonets. So the Presidents statement that we have fewer horses and bayonets is true.

"We Also have FEWER Horses & Bayonets, because the nature of our military has changed". At no time did he say they were useless or that we do NOT use them. Most of our operations are done from a distance.

As a proud owner of a bayonet used in WW2 ,,,Our President was making the statement we don't fight wars with horses and bayonets anymore. For this guy that owns this company he should be glad now for the publicity....some people are so overly sensitive,,my gosh calm down,,,,,BTW,...horses are still for sale too!

If you all would just listen to what the President said...He said "we have fewer bayonets" that's all. The President never said bayonets did not matter. Times have changed is why he said we have FEWER bayonets.

Stop it! You are just grasping for straws.

The president is right-- you don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

And he made the observation on good grounds-- the American arsenal still includes bayonets for some situations, but most warfare bypassed sword and knife-wielding long ago.

To get an idea how backward the idea of a bayonet is, the soldier must be at very close quarters, and unable to fire for effect. The problem at Tora Bora was our weapons did not have the range needed, not that we lacked bayonets. Marines at Fallujah used tanks and air, just as any other modern army would.

Anyone who has seen the work of cluster munitions and airborne miniguns knows sword and knifeplay is obsolete. Thank goodness we have a president who understands what the Joint Chiefs of Staff is telling him about modern warfare.

For Romney to compare WW1 capital ships with modern naval vessels proves he needs a new defense adviser.

The president is right-- you don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Although bayonets and horses are still used in some situations, the American arsenal does not rely upon them in any significant way. The era of sword and knife-wielding vanished long ago.

At Tora Bora, the problem was the range of our weapons was too short, not that they lacked bayonets. Marines at Fallujah used tanks and air, just as any modern army would.

Anyone who has seen the work of cluster munitions and air-mounted miniguns understands modern warfare is a totally different world.

Thank goodness we have a president who understands what the Joint Chiefs of Staff tells him about modern weapons and military operations.

For Romney to compare WW1 capital ships with modern naval vessels-- one-for-one-- shows he needs to find another defense adviser.

Romney's understanding of diplomacy comes from the 1980's, his social policy from the 1950's and his economic policy from the 1920's. Clearly, in Obama, we have a 21st century president.

Educate yourselves.

", by virtue of the USMC still using bayonets, there actually are more bayonets in use than 1916, when the army had between 100,000 and 140,000 enlisted members. As of 2010, the Corps boasted 203,000 active duty members and 40,000 reserve marines." Awr Hawkins.

WTF

I don't understand where these people have gotten their education. At no time did he say bayonets weren't relevant We probably do have fewer bayonets. And horses. We have fewer nukes and they are very relevant.

Okay so people are very intent on making sure that we all know The President didn't say "we do not use" instead of "we are not using"! bayonet's. These are the same people that some how manage to turn a blind eye when The President(smartest guy in the room, with impeccable creased pants) says that Governor Romney wanted GM to go bankrupt. Constantly to this day after having more than enough time to read the NY Times Oped piece where he called for a "managed bankruptcy" and have the Government back all manufacture warranties?

You people are amazing with your blatant Hippocratic behavior. What would be so wrong in holding everyone to their words. We sent George H.W. packing for his "read my lips" comment. Why is President Obama any different, those claims were his, if once just once he would have used one of his many TV appearances to just own up to his short comings I would feel differently.

He is like the bad boyfriend that wants to spend time and go out more after his girl says she is leaving for those very reasons! The mid terms of G.W.Bush saw the house go left. Then the Senate in 07. Finally 2008 gave us President Obama. Simple math people, stop telling us how bad thing were when you got here. America knows just what is and was going on: however this isn't the Congo no one rounds you up in the morning against your will. Elections are open to US born citizens and their territories over the age of 35. It's a conscious decision, you are the "Commander in Chief".

So please Command and stop complaining!

Yours truly,

A voter
