President Barack Obama has offended the bayonet community ... TMZ has learned.

TMZ spoke with multiple people in the bayonet industry who tell us they were shocked and even offended when Obama brought up the weapon during last night's debate.

FYI -- Obama was going after Romney when he said, "You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed."

According to the official U.S. Marine Corps website, every Marine is STILL required to complete a bayonet training program ... because "the weapon becomes just as effective [as a rifle] in close combat situations."

We spoke with Dan Riker from Bayonet Inc. -- a leading military surplus outlet that specializes in bayonets -- who tells us he believes Obama's comment was "ignorant ... because our soldiers still use bayonets."

He adds, “[Bayonets] are still distributed to the military all the time -- he should get educated on it”

For the record, Riker says he won't be voting for Obama ... "and I didn't vote for him last election either."

Obama is ignorant? So, I guess Mr. Riker has the numbers of how many bayonets are in use today among military members compared to 1916.

Yeah he never said bayonets aren't used. He implied they are used less often because our technology in warfare has dramatically increased since 1916. can't wait for this election to be over.

People need to remember the difference between producing bayonets, being issued bayonets, and using the bayonets.

With the arrival of things like e-mail, e-books, and e-commerce, our use of lumber products is fewer today than it was in 1916, That doesn't mean we don't use paper, wood, and other lumber products anymore, nor does it mean any of that is being produced less. I am quite certain that it is being produced more than back in 1916. It just means that we use less of it.

Let's just be clear on the issues:
1. TMZ you are not a political site please stop trying. Stick to what you're good at reporting on how many drinks Lindsay had last night.
2. This guy is a nobody who has a military surplus store. He is not a leading supplier to the military. He sells their leftover crap.
3. What other bayonet experts did you speak to? Because it would be interesting to know what expert would actually say that bayonets were still as necessary as they once were.
4. Just because we are still have a complete training course on bayonets for the Marines does not make them suddenly more useful.
5.The nature of our military has changed and thank goodness we have more sophisticated techniques then thrusting our soldiers into hand to hand combat as a first choice. Now we can use this as a last option.

The Army has 36 horses at Ft. Bragg. They are used as goodwill ambassadors and for parades. They also have two mules at West Point. None are used in combat theaters. We did supply mules to the Afghans early in that conflict. Special Forces are considering using them again for transport in Afghanistan.

The last use of horses by the U.S. military in combat was in the Philippines in February of 1942.

"Fewer" was the key word. Republicans usually have selective reasoning during elections.

He never said the military doesn't use bayonets. He said we have fewer of them, which I'm sure is true.

Fewer bayonets doesn't mean no bayonets - Dan Riker. This is the 21st century.Take your one vote and cast it on Romney who got whipped by Obama on Foreign Policy. Romney is a Pre-Program ROBOT with a Botox face.

TMZ really ought to rename their website to reflect "TPZ" or Tea-Party Zone if you will.

Nice diversion TMZ, I suppose you promised the Donald not to report until he gives you an interview, too late, it's been leaked on radar online and it's not news, oh what a shocker! NOT!

Every one needs to just let it go already. Nobody really cares about this. Obama was trying to make a point and he made it. Historically, during world war 2 bayonets were used a lot more because bullets were in short supply, whereas now, most soldiers would use a bullet even at close range.

Obama looks like Stymie from the our gang comedy show. What a petty little man he is. Such an embarrassment to America.
