India.Arie

I Didn't Mean

To Look Light-Skinned

3/29/2013 10:15 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0329-india-arie-5
Afro-centric singer India.Arie -- famous for singing about her "Brown Skin" -- is now making excuses for the extremely light-skinned photo on the cover of her new single ... telling friends, her skin was NOT intentionally whitewashed.

There's been a lot of commotion about the new photo -- ironically, for her new song, "Cocoa Butter" -- because India's skin is noticeably lighter than what she really looks like ('memba Beyonce?).

But sources close to India tell TMZ, the criticism is ridiculous ... because the "lightened" skin is merely the product of the camera flash and angle. India never asked to be lightened.

But the fact remains ... India approved the photo, and HAD to notice it wasn't a true reflection of her skin color.

India just tweeted, writing, "Personally speaking! i'm happy to say I have NOT BLEACHED my skin LOL! ROTF at the thought."

She added, "1. I wouldn't endanger my health that way 2. i'm so in love with myself I have no DESIRE to BLEACH myself. 3. The GLOW you see IS (magnificent) lighting 4. THE LIGHT you see, Well thats all ME!!"

Why does nyone care? Bad photog, insecurities, whatever, it is her album and her life and is hurting absolutely no one. She is not going to come pay your bills or rent/mortgage and therefore her choices are NOT going to affect any one else. They really aren't. If you want to obsess over someone else's choices, the perhaps its you who need to take another look in the mirror. Why tear someone down because you disagree with them, when it is such a trivial matter?

You *&&$^^^#(#@ traitor! Another one giving up their blackness to be in the white world. F this! You should know that a Jew would never ever give up their identity. Your ancestors are flipping in their graves and Dr. Martin Luther King taking a bullet was all in vain.

If you look at the sleeves on her dress, the inside, clearly shows lighter skin which cannot be lighten by camera flashes. If it was the flashes it would shown as more pasty or chalky. If she felt the picture was not a true refection she should not have approved it and ask for a re-shoot.

This is stupid. When a black person wears black is more likely to be more darker than her actual skin tone. dark colors lightens black. Grow up idiots.

So as someone who's not American, let me get this straight. If Caucasian celebrities use lighting, over/under-exposure to make their skin look more even or to make their eyes pop more or whatever the purpose is, that is just good old photographic trickery. If over-exposure or bright lighting is done on African-Americans, it's racist. What would be more appropriate, photographing everyone in a dark room without flash?

You Americans, man. You do my head in sometimes. Race, race, race.

Tanning is a NATURAL response to being in the sun for white people. Unless overdone, it is natural and healthy.

Bleaching is not. Bleaching is an unnatural process with SERIOUS DIRE CONSEQUENCES which DOES NOT LOOK GOOD IT LOOKS AWFUL!!! AND IT KILLS!

BLACK PEOPLE HAVE the highest incidence of kidney problems and compications from diabetic kidney disease!!
African Americans constitute 32 percent of patients in the United. ... for kidney failure, although they are only 11 percent of the population.

Stop saying bleaching is ok, it is NOT! IT is deadly, it looks bad, and it's a sign weakness.
Blacks who bleach look stupid.

This woman is beautiful in the darker photo, and unattractive in the bleached out version.

Stop saying it's ok to BLEACH!! STUPID!!
OH, whites who overtan are criticized as well so get over it!!

Taking pictures of folks with dark skin is much trickier than others. Without enough light you get silhouettes without facial details. The flash can "wash out" the picture and give the subject a lighter appearance. White folks can end up looking like Casper the Ghost ... another side-effect can be red-eye.

I'm a hobbyist photographer and its quite normal for skin to appear lighter with studio lighting. This image in specific looks to have been shot with a ring light or beauty dish, which give off a rather hard light. So its no surprise she appears lighter.
