& Closeted Athletes Coming Out

EXCLUSIVE

Magic Johnson has never talked about it before ... but he wanted to open up about his gay son and the implications that Earvin Johnson III's coming out will have in the black community, in the sports community and in their lives.

TMZ sat down with the NBA legend for an unbelievably candid interview -- we've divided the video into three parts:

1) How Magic went to his son around the age of 13 and asked, "Are you gay?" Magic explains why he felt the need to approach his kid and the importance of letting EJ know his whole family loved and supported him.

2) Magic tells us how he feels about some of the hateful reactions to EJ's coming out on African-American blogs and whether he's bitter, given his unparalleled support of the black community.

3) Magic talks about how his son's coming out could inspire professional athletes to follow suit.  Harvey also asks Magic how, as the owner of the L.A. Dodgers, he would react to a player coming out.

You gotta watch Magic -- he's awesome and inspiring.

did magic really have to ask his son if he was gay when he was 13? I mean on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being Neil Patrick Harris and 10 being Perez Hilton, this kid is definitely a 10.

The kid looks like a hairdresser from RHOA. And gayer than Miss Lawrence.

I'm shocked by Magic's behavior, in a good way. I think its wonderful his son didn't have to struggle with coming out, didn't have to spend years trying to get up the courage to tell his dad. This is the first time I've heard of a celebrity parent/athlete saying "are you gay?", in a positive tone rather than as an accusation.

What does your son have to do with athletes coming out...he's not an athlete. Its not like its you coming out...maybe you should.

Mr. Johnson...please note that it was not only the African American blogs commenting about your son. You are on TMZ a mainstream site and I've seen plenty of homophobic comments about your son here. Please do not single African Americans about any black lash your son receives.

I wouldn't disown a child because he or she was gay but I would be EXTREMELY embarrassed by this.

It's very good that's he's cool with his son still because a lot of people would disown a love one over that and other things but for him to say the Black Press was hard on him isn't true and shame on him for saying that. I wonder what he would he feel if he read the comments of a lot of none Black people on here that's always saying racist things and things about gay people. My thing is if they aren't harming you then why worry about their lifestyle

Wow, he’s not only gay, but he’s really, really gay. Haha On a serious note: Not really sure why being gay is still such a big deal. Probably because more people in the public eye will not come out publically. People need to realize that gay people are just people. They’re your family, friends, peers, co-workers. Hollywood celebrities are so big on gay rights/gay marriage. Maybe these celebrities who are gay should start showing that it is no big deal to be gay. Maybe only then will it not be considered taboo. By the way, so proud of the way Magic stepped up for his son. This is the way every parent should react. Unlike that famous gay icon, Cher, who threw her daughter out of the house. His son is obviously very comfortable in his own skin. This is a win/win.
