Jackie Robinson

Pitcher's Family PISSED

Over Racist Portrayal in '42'

The daughter of a MLB pitcher who threw at Jackie Robinson's head in the movie "42" tells TMZ ... producers blatantly disregarded the truth and unfairly portrayed her dad as a racist.

It was one of the most important scenes in the flick ... big, bad Fritz Ostermueller (pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates at the time) fired a baseball at Jackie's head ... and then shouted at him, "You don't belong here!!!"

Problem is ... Fritz never beaned Jackie in the head in real life -- according to multiple reports at the time of the incident, the ball struck Jackie's arm.

Now, Fritz's daughter, Sherrill, is lashing out to TMZ -- "The producers of ‘42’ certainly owe my father an apology. If they were going to portray my father falsely, they should have used a fictional name."

0429_fritz_ostermueller_sub2Sherrill wants to make it clear -- her beef is NOT with Jackie ... "I have the deepest respect for Jackie Robinson and the courage he had to change baseball.”

However, Sherrill says producers have damaged her father's reputation beyond repair -- she tells us he was a "good man" who was never as angry or violent as he was portrayed in the movie.

We asked Sherrill if she believed her father was a racist -- to which she replied, "My dad, to my knowledge, was not a racist. I was not raised in that type of home."

We reached out to the people behind the movie -- so far, no word back.

Accuracy in movies has been proven to be an afterthought most recently Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, etc. In this case the directors and producers are only interested in the deification of Jackie Robinson and not an objective biography.

this story is garbage. She is upset because her dad threw the ball at Jackie Robinson's arm, but most people think it was thrown at his head. Did he say "you don't belong here?" Maybe he missed. Maybe he was a racist who couldn't throw the ball straight.
Also, if someone asks you if your dad was a racist, and you answer "not to the best of my knowledge," you're a liar.

Everytime a story associated with race comes up u see the true racists in America rear their ugly heads. First of all the heading for this 'story' is exaggerated TMZ - it should be 'Pitcher's family pissed over Racist portrayal in Movie 42 portrayed by Jackie Robinson'. Secondly, most of us alive today don't know the whole story in those times, tumultous as it was we can only watch the movie and pick sense from nonsense. Thirdly, why in the hell are commentors going off-track and including the President of the U.S. in their vile comments....STICK TO THE STORY @ HAND. If u have no real contribution, then shut-up!! Fourthly, whether this man (Fritz) hit Robinson in his head or arm doesn't change the price of bread. His daughther sounds more affected by the fact that her father is being portrayed as a racist. In my opinion, for someone to utter the words "U don't belong here" in those times constitutes being a racist. I haven't seen the movie, as yet, but I can say now it could go either way; Fritz was racist and she's in denial/embarrassed now or he wasn't and he had to go along with order of the day back then. We (black people) need to understand that not every white person in those times were racist. Some persons just went along with the order of the day (YES IT WAS STILL WRONG) to 'keep the peace'. Picking on each other now won't change the past

LAWSUIT! Slander, Defamation of Character etc. Damages, Damages and more Damages! IMHO the Film Company has a serious problem on their hands and should change the scenes, pony up to the family or not release the film. Lawyers must be salivating over this.

Good for her. those who say "it's just a movie" are either naive or disingenuous at the manipulative influence Hollywood and the media can have on people, especially kids. Be careful to be accurate when you demonize someone. If the producers a accurate, theh

Going against the grain here, but if you read this story, it's one woman defending her relative against a movie that shows him doing something he didn't do (and knowing that the movie version is most likely to live on as "truth" - and she's dead right, that is how it goes). So good for you, Sherrill, sticking up for your family, if you don't, then this libellous rubbish will be permanently stamped on your father's name, and if he didn't do it, there's no way he should be tainted with that smell just so someone can make money off a "more interesting" movie. That'd never be OK, so keep it up, protect your family name.

... if the producers are accurate, they can prove it. Then again, as we've seen over and over again Hbollywood can misrepresent without being held accountable. (Sorry for spelling error earlier, typing on a phone)

Well considering the fact that she isn't confidently saying her father was absolutely not a racist, then its a non story yet again!! Lets face it most ppl didn't want things to change that played ball in that era

All movies based on true stories change the actual details drastically. At least it's actually true that he hit Jackie with the ball. It wouldn't be a surprise if that never happened at all. I've seen them change the cause of death in movies. Now that's crazy.
