Paula Deen

My N-Word Excuse ...

I'm Old

6/20/2013 10:40 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0620_paula_deen_article_tmzPaula Deen is using the "I'm from the South" excuse to justify her use of the N-word ... saying that when she grew up, dropping an N-bomb was no big deal because everyone was racist.

Paula Deen Enterprises just issued the following statement to TMZ ... "During a deposition where she swore to tell the truth, Ms. Deen recounted having used a racial epithet in the past, speaking largely about a time in American history which was quite different than today."

FYI -- the "time" Paula admitted to using the N-word was 1986!!!!!

Anyway, the statement continues ... "[Paula] was born 60 years ago when America's South had schools that were segregated, different bathrooms, different restaurants and Americans rode in different parts of the bus. This is not today."

"To be clear Ms. Deen does not find acceptable the use of this term under any circumstance by anyone nor condone any form of racism or discrimination. "

As we previously reported, Deen admitted using the N-word during a sworn deposition stemming from a lawsuit ... in which the chef and her brother are accused of using offensive language at Paula's restaurant in Georgia.

Some of the comments for this story are interesting, to say the least. One woman wrote, "All white people are racists." She refuses to acknowledge how that comment is racist. Seems that anyone who calls her out on this is a white racist. Pretzel logic, anyone? Another person wrote, "I hate all white people. I hope they die and go to hell." Great way to bridge the racial divide and start healing, NOT. Like charity, tolerance begins at home. If we can all be tolerant of the people in our daily circle, then perhaps when one circle touches another circle, the tolerance will expand.

There have been other comments wondering why the white racists posting comments on this story are mystified as to why they can't use some form of n*gg*r when it's common usage in black-to-black conversation. Are we reading the same posts? I think the point being made is that n*gg* is not a newly minted word. N*gg* is the improper enunciation of n*gg*r. Ergo, it is disingenuous to be upset that any form of the word is used by some people, yet not by others.

To be clear, the use of any ethnic/racial epithet is wrong. It was wrong of Paula Deen to have said what she said. One hopes Ms. Deen has evolved since than and now understands covert racism is as bad as overt racism and has changed her behavior. If not, then by all means, send her a message by boycotting her show, restaurants, cookbook and other products.

Who cares, get over it. Tired of the double standard of blacks making derrogatory comments about whites, but offended when the reverse happens. Why don't you start in your own community with eliminating that word? It is in so many songs, so stop with the double standard.

In a culture where black Americans (stop calling yourself African American, I don't call myself German-American) constantly use this word in everyday life and in their very own entertainment, how can anyone complain? Lets look at the root of the word...it is an insult, no doubt, but the meaning behind it was to be a stupid or ignorant person. Who goes around embracing something that was used to insult them at one time but then forbids others from using the word?

not meaning to stir up the hornets nest but i feel that this subject is taken WAY to seriously, i mean come on its not like she goes around saying it everywhere, and i believe that she said what she said at the time because it was sort of ok back then. that said i really do NOT care if anyone uses the word, even at me. Freedom of speech, and i really don't believe Paula uses this word anymore i feel like ppl found out she used it in the past and went crazy with it. i think we should throw away the race card for everything. Just act like we all the same color and everything will be fine. Love for all, including paula, and haters who are hating (not including paula cuz she not a hater) i love everyone equally.

Marge Schott was old. To those that are NOT old look her up. Paula Deen needs to retire back into her hole.
But let's not let up here people. Take a look at that racist Kanye West. Do the research on HIS daddy.

Not all white ppl in the South were racist but most who grew up during that time are-probably most are now. The ones who stood up with Black people got killed or ran out of town.

Thats why bigots call any period before the Black Power movement the "good ole days".

They want to go back to a period of lynching, rape, indoctrination, govt experiments, of literally roasting Black people and then smiling for the cameras, fear, terror bigotry against all races and anti-communism and anti-union (the ones who organized for racial unity) and of course the N-word was told TO Black ppl happily. A time of fear and terror- and they could kill with impunity.

Thats why so many white racist people are defending George Zimmerman. They think you should be able to kill Black people without a trial or a fake trial and get away with it-just like in the good ole days.

back then it was acceptable language. Brazil nuts were called ****** toes, Blazing Saddles was a hit movie. you could smoke in public places. as the world changes - we have to change with it. but it does not make us racist. why don't we have a WET station, they have a BET station? why must they have a separate Black graduation ceremony? if anyone is racist its the ones who complain.

Can all of you honestly say that you have never used the N word in your life? I grew up with lots of racist people and have probably used the word before but not any more. I despise racists and I have a hard time believing Paula is a racist. The whole thing is being blown out of proportion.

Old people are excused but I am speaking of people in their 80's. I am about the same age as Paula and I know better and yes, I grew up where it was common, too. Paula's not that old.

The survey at the end of the article is a bit confusing. It was "old people can be racist" , should be "should old people be racist". Can & should are so different, yet people still ask if they, can help you, can do things, etc... Of course they can, but should they?
Signed, Old white (non-racist) lady from the south.

Give the woman a break. The "N" word is everywhere now days, but I guess you have to singing a rap song to use it correctly?! Who doesn't use it anymore? This is being blown WAY out of proportion. Must not be much else to talk about. These shows are so ridiculous.
