TLC's 'Waterfalls'

We Were Blocked From

Using Left Eye on Remake

TLC
says their remake of 'Waterfalls' with a Japanese pop-star was NOT a slap in the face to Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes -- in fact, they claim they weren't allowed to use Lisa's rap, because they don't own the rights.

TMZ broke the story, Lisa's family was upset when TLC released the 20th anniversary addition of arguably one of their biggest hits ever -- and axed Lisa from the track ... replacing her with J-Pop queen Namie Amuro.

But remaining members Chili and T-Boz are setting the record straight ... claiming the band doesn't own the master recording rights to Lisa's rap, and all requests to gain the rights have been DENIED.

Chili tells TMZ, "We were forced to use a creative way to honor Lisa's memory and celebrate this milestone with the fans."

TLC also says they reached out to Ron Lopes -- Lisa's brother -- before releasing the track.

TLC adds, "We have and always will protect our sister’s legacy as TLC consists of the three of us collectively ... there will never be a replacement for Lisa or any members in TLC."

Now, here's the remake -- sounds a lot like the original, except for Lisa's rap, of course ...

Why re-do the song at all if you couldn't get the rights? And why call the brother and not the MOTHER?? HMNNNNNN.

Personally don't understand why they had to put out a remake - unless they are strapped for cash.

With the new hologram technology, they could have had Lisa with them on stage again. Re-recording the song with someone new seems kind of silly.

Why do this except money? So stupid. Leave it be, its such a lie how theyre doing it for "anniversary and remembering her...". ... and with a freakin japanese singer. Come on.
The song was good as it was, Lisa had her own special high voice and combined with other girls, made the song work. This sh*t theyre doing is sad and dirty.

I find this totally disrespectful to Lisa Lopes and her family. Why mess with perfection. It reminds me of Will Smith and his ilk of a family ruining classic movies and stories.

I guess they just didn't offer enough money to the grieving relatives to use the recording of her RAP.
.
The world will be so much the poorer for not hearing it again. Oh wait, it's on YouTube - never mind.

This was just a blatant money grab - because there's no other reason to re-do this song AT ALL. Hey, I guess it's easier than writing and recording a new song, right?

Lame explanation really. Contacting the brother after-the-fact means that they didn't give the family a chance to help get Lisa's rap released. Pressure from Lisa's family may have given them the leverage they needed to use Lisa's voice. At any rate, using that Japanese pop star to "stand-in" was a ridiculous way to honor an Urban American rapper. (I use the term "rapper" loosely because Lisa really didn't have real rapping skills). Chilli and TBoz should've put forth an effort to get a replacement third, even if they had to get the original girl that Chili replaced. They were a really good girl group.

they should have done it without the rap, because that sounds f*cking horrible.

HUGE TLC fan back in the day. I can't believe with they just did to this song. this is desperate for attention, and makes TLC look like they sold out. If you were going to do this remember left eye... then get a rapper... and someone you can understand. I felt embarrassed for TLC as I was listening to this. SAD SAD SAD.

This is what money does.

Also looks like the time of Left eye's death was the same time TLC died.

Not as bad as people are making it out to be. Although they should've gotten a rapper to rap. Just sayin'.

For the past few years all I have read about the remaining members of TLC has been quite nice. I believe they suffered the loss of a friend and band mate. I applaud that they are trying to pick up and continue. To do a re-make is certainly a good way to pick up where they had to leave off. Too often I have read about family members of the dead being very harsh and greedy. (Can you say "Jackson Family"?) Though I do not care for this genre of music I have respect for what these ladies are trying to do. And including a Japanese pop star? Simply brilliant.
