The cast of "Glee" -- along with several producers -- knew Cory Monteith was battling a heroin addiction earlier this year and were the catalyst in his decision to go back to rehab, TMZ has learned.

Sources connected to the production tell us ... it was no secret Monteith was off his game back in March -- and it became clear he was relapsing, specifically with heroin.

We're told the cast and the producers became very concerned ... and knew they had to address the issue with Cory.

Sources say ... the group sat down with Cory and had an "open conversation" with the actor -- stressing how much they cared about him and wanted him to get help.

One source tells us Cory was very receptive -- "It wasn't met with resistance ... He was always so grateful and aware of how fortunate he was."

"The decision was to best help our friend. The needs of the show fell second to his well-being."

Cory voluntarily checked into rehab at the end of March for a 30 day stint ... but despite his efforts, he couldn't defeat his demons, and last week, he died from a lethal mixture of heroin and alcohol.

He was 31.

I would be curious to know what was really troubling him. Heroin addiction is a symptom of the real problem.

One month of rehab sounds more like a PR move to me.

If he was a serious addict, why not stay for six months to a year?

I bet Cory got pretty drunk and that triggered him to go out looking for heroin. I bet all he had to do was walk a few blocks to a street corner to find some or drive to a particular street where they give you drive thru service like McDonalds.
Since he was drunk, he probably bought some highly pure heroin and then shot up too much of it. Drunk people aren't known for making good choices you know.

The alcohol and heroin together probably made him choke on his own vomit when he laid down.

My cousin works with addicts, specializes in heroin addiction. It's a double edged sword. First there is the addiction to the drug itself which is caused by the drug. Then there's the addiction brought on by usually a deep seated psychological problem that the use of heroin masks or makes the person feel better. there lies the problem. Getting off of the dependency caused by the drug is fairly easy, with professional help. It the deep seated psychological reason that the user is using heroin to mask and feel better is the extreme hard part of getting them off of the drug. Most heroin addicts do have a deeply seated psychological problem. which is why they started using the drug in the first place and getting to that problem and trying to solve it, well that's the hardest part of all. The patient has to be honest and dig deep and some people just can't or won't face the real problem, until they do no amount of rehab and detoxing will help.

30 days for a heroin addiction? Heroin is a one way ticket to hell.

So he wasn't sober in the States and party boy in Canada. And drugs and alcohol can kill. What a concept. Too much death for all the wrong reasons. I don't care who they are, Stars and musicians should be drug tested and not hired if using. If producers knew he was using he should have been pulled from the set at once.
All involved in his coverup are guilty of his death.

You can't save someone who doesn't want to save himself.

And addicts have to understand just because you are addicted to drugs and not alcohol doesn't mean you should do alcohol. When you are supposed to be sober, you should stay away from BOTH liquor and drugs.

Please let Cory rest in peace. The man could not overcome his addiction, as hard as he tried. This is a tragic loss for all of his fans of Glee.

Perhaps having professionals involved in the intervention would have helped. Did they sing through it?

1 month of rehab is definitely not enough, his career took presidence over his getting the real help he needed. For the amount and length of his additions he had,he would of needed to stay in rehab alot longer then that. Many rehabs stays go for months sometimes up to a year!

They must have been discreet about it.
Maybe he shouldn't have been left alone for 10 hours if they were aware of his problems?
