Dick Van Dyke

Pulled Out of

Flaming Vehicle

8/19/2013 2:40 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

87-year-old actor Dick Van Dyke narrowly averted disaster moments ago on an L.A. freeway -- when his Jaguar burst into flames -- but thankfully, he was pulled to safety in the nick of time.

The hero who rescued him is a guy named Jason Pennington, who tells TMZ, he was driving along the 101 when he saw a car full of smoke on the side of the road ... and an elderly man hunched over at the wheel.

Pennington tells us, he pulled up and ran over to discover Dick Van Dyke struggling inside.

Pennington says he opened the driver door and pulled the actor out of the vehicle as flames tore through the engine.

We're told Dick was slightly disoriented by the experience but did NOT need medical attention. His wife came to pick him up shortly after and brought him home.

As for the car ... it's toast.

I think Jags are gorgeous inside and out. They've had some of the most beautiful designs of any cars. The 63 e type convertible is my favorite. I own a Jag and it was great until right after 50,000 miles then it started having problems. Was going to trade it in but decided to fix instead. Wrong choice. Have spent about 9K in the last year and a half on repairs. Anyway, the important thing is that he's ok and that this good samaritan was there to help him.

RYUGA, obviously from what I'm reading on other's comments, you are one of those sad, attention-seeking people who need to use shock value to get any type of recognition (whether it's good or bad). How pitiful you are! Dick Van Dyke is a real class act - something apparently you will never know anything about.

He still looks damn good for 87! I'm glad he's OK.

Obviously driving age has nothing to do with a car catching fire and exploding with no other car or any impact involved! People are so quick to blame age for something that could happen at any age. So glad he was helped before the car went up in flames.

I don't know why anyone would buy a Jaguar, they have always been trouble, even Jaguar mechanics couldn't fix their problems, and here it is 20 yrs., later and they still are having the same problems. Junk, they look good but they are junk.

"Van Dyke narrowly averts car disaster"

I understand that Mr Van Dyke was in a Government Motors showroom preparing to puarchase a Chevy Volt when a friend talked him out of it.
