Joe Theismann

'Redskins' Name Is a TRIBUTE to Native Americans

10/21/2013 2:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

102113_joe_theisman_launchJoe Theismann is flipping the script -- telling TMZ he believes the name "Redskins" isn't derogatory at all ... insisting it's a TRIBUTE to Native Americans.

Theismann -- who quarterbacked Washington from 1974 to 1985 (winning Super Bowl XVII along the way) was at LAX this weekend and told us, "I was very proud to wear the Redskin uniform."

Joe says he was also proud to "represent the Native American nations of this country as proudly as we could with such great honor."

Theismann says after he won the Super Bowl, he was given an "Indian headdress" -- but couldn't remember which tribe gave it to him.

For a guy who once had his leg snapped in half, Joe moved out of the way pretty quickly when we asked if the team should finally change its name.

So, we gotta ask ...

The name is not a tribute any more than the "N" word is to African Americans!

Having lived in DC for the first part of my life, I was raised around hardcore Redskins fans. They, the team and people around the team hold the name in high esteem. The people who are always looking for reasons to scream that something is offensive are the ONLY ones making a bad name out of it. Seriously, people need to stop it already.

Just call them the Red Necks since white people are not allowed to be offended by anything.

If we get rid of the Redskins, we should get rid of the 'Patriots' because weren't they the ones who took ou the Native Americans?

What is wront with todays PC world!! Literally can have nothing nowadays without some PC nutjob throwing the race card at it!!! Its the name of a decorated and proud footbll team leave it be!!! Im sure there are more pressing issues to worry about than this! And the only reason celebs are jumping on the bandwagon is because they dont want to seem bad... if they had an issue with it before how come no one spoke out about it before!!

Poor Joe; after being fired by every network, as a commentator, he'll do and just about anything to be in the news.

Somehow, this is a really important issue... for white people.

As Rick Reilly wrote a couple of weeks ago, most Natvie Americans just do not care about this topic, and and a whole lot of them actually cheers for the Redskins - as one of them told him "Who else am I suppose to root for - the Cowboys?"

One major things I've never understood about this controversy: why is everyone is on Washington's case, but nobody is saying anything about the Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians or the Kansas City Chiefs... what's the difference there, exactly?

Offensive speech is not hate speech. Free speech is what this nation was founded on. If you are offended by someone else's words, then you can use your own words or ignore it. This is all about limiting free speech. They want people to be worried that everything they say or do might be considered offensive, so they have to check with the state to know what is all right to say.

This is the precursor to fascism. You have the right to offend others in this country, it is one of the founding principles of the nation. All this crying and whining about names and false sympathy for others over names only consolidates more power at the top. They will tell you what opinions are okay and which aren't.

So much has been done to wrong Native Americans and is still being done, that this is really a non-issue. If they want to show support for Native Americans, why don't they free Leonard Peltier? He was framed for murder and is serving a life sentence in solitary at Leavenworth for being the head of AIM.

False pleasantries like attacking someone over a name means nothing. Do something substantial for the Native Americans.

Hello My Name Is....

So will Kansas City also need to change it's name? Is the Tomahawk Chop offensive? What about GM's Jeep Grand Cherokee? And New Zealand's Rugby Club - "the All-Blacks"? What about the Vikings emblem - is the blonde moustached Viking in the cliche horned helmet offensive to Scandinavians? Where does it end? Get over it people - it's just a name.

With due respects to our great athlete Joe T., the Redskins should change the team name to The Washington George's, a tribute to George and the American Indian. We have the Cleveland Browns (Paul).

I'm part American Indian, and I've never considered the term "Redskins" derogatory, whether it be the name of football team or a nickname for part of my heritage. People need to lighten up. If you just want to be angry, and make an issue of just anything, then you can pick anything apart. I expect that the same people raising heck over the name Redskins probably raise heck over a lot of things, not just that.
