Tom Cruise

My Job's As Hard As

Fighting in Afghanistan

11/11/2013 6:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Cruise's lawyer, Bert Fields, says the notion that Tom compares his acting to fighting a war is a distortion, pointing to a section in the deposition -- not part of the deposition that was publicly released -- in which Tom is asked, "Do you believe the situations [being in a movie and fighting a war in Afghanistan] are the same?"  Tom replies, "Oh come on."  Fields says that clearly means "of course not."

For the record, here's Tom's quote, responding to the opposing lawyer in the deposition:

Lawyer:  "Now, your counsel has publicly equated your absence from Suri for these extended periods of time as being analogous to someone fighting in Afghanistan.  Are you aware of that?"

Cruise:  "I didn't hear the Afghanistan, but that's what it feels like, and certainly on this last movie, it was brutal.  It was brutal."

Tom Cruise not only thinks he trains harder than Olympic athletes, he believes his job as a professional actor is as grueling as fighting the war in Afghanistan -- this according to legal docs obtained by TMZ.

As we reported, Cruise recently sat for a deposition in his $50 million libel suit against a magazine publisher that claimed he abandoned daughter Suri -- and his quotes are GOLD.

First, the Middle East -- Tom says his location shoots are just like serving a tour in Afghanistan, "That's what it feels like. And certainly on this last movie, it was brutal. It was brutal."
1108_afghanistan_war_footerAs for his physical training, Tom said, "There is difficult physical stamina and preparation. Sometimes I've spent months, a year, and sometimes two years preparing for a single film." But the kicker, he adds, "A sprinter for the Olympics, they only have to run two races a day. When I'm shooting, I could potentially have to run 30, 40 races a day, day after day."

1108_olympic_action_footerBut it's not all grenades and triathlons  ... Tom says he's only flown commercial ONCE in the last 4 years ... and that was because he had no choice.

And there's this ... Tom says the skills he's picked up along the way have provided shortcuts in his relationship with Suri.  For example, he says it's not always necessary for him to be physically around Suri, because he can tell her vivid stories on the phone that come to life.  Tom says, "I've gotten very good at [talking on the phone]. I've gotten very good at it. I tell wonderful stories and they like hearing it."

I know this will get HATE marks, but I'm going to say it anyway. I think Tom is comparing himself and his relationship to Suri in the means of his time and a soldiers time away from their families while they are working.

If Tom Cruise has simply said that acting like many jobs require him to be on locations for extended periods, I would have respected that.

But to compare acting, with horrors of war?

What our soldiers experience is real life and no actor should be so arrogant as to compare what they do with the reality of war and horrors that come with it. There are no fake bullets in war and death is very real.

There are not enough derogatory words to describe this creepy, ignorant , little jackass !!!!!

I think he's saying the ABSENCE from Suri was "brutal", not the actual work itself. Again, comments are being blown out of proportion, and it was the lawyer who equated the time away to fighting in Afghanistan, which sounds like lawyer-speak. I think the "abandoned by Daddy" headline was unfair, but whether litigation is justified, that remains to be seen.

TMZ left their headline up for TWO DAYS after the lawyer released that statement before posting it here. Gotta get those clicks.

Of note-
Marines are the only military personnel on this comment board that are indignant. TMZ confused them by writing their headline in bold, which made them think someone was yelling an order at them. Simmer down, grunts, there's more applesauce at mess, go along, now.
Tom Cruise didn't compare movies to war. He compared being away from a child to being away from a child. Either movie or war, it that part is a hard choice. Again, marines don't remember that it was their choice to enlist, don't confuse them. Prolly Tom has spoken with military personnel and remembers that he has parental absence in common with them-it's his analogy. The fact that a lawyer skillfully carried it out of context is why lawyers are paid the big bucks. It made douchies like you think Tom really thinks that. Was it a dopey analogy rife with subcontext that doesn't fit? Sure. Tom is a multi millionaire, he can leave when he wants, he could have compromised to save his marriage, etc, etc. But the anger in this comment board is not his doing-it is a direct result of a lawyer making you think Tom forgot all of these things he doesn't have in common with military.
Tom Cruise is a doucheface beause he believes psychiatrists plant nukes in volcanoes. The deposition was actually sane compared to that.
To the poster who suggested Tom is a has-been: You must mean that his bankroll has-been growing. I think people still watch his stuff, it's always out at Redbox, anyway.

Tom Cruise is the MAN!!!!! Standing up for himself, I think that is admirable. So..... everything that comes out of his mouth isn't PC, but these comments dont come from hate or ignorance, but from speaking his mind. I think he should be allowed to do so without being judged so harshly. I mean people just crucified him after that Oprah stunt and because of his religion. He is still the most likeable movie star on the planet, and has been so for 30 years!!!!!!

Whats with everyone trying to make actors become politically correct? He felt like saying it at the moment because it was just a what? Just like when you have an outburst of anger and say you wanna kill someone, do you really mean it or or simply want to vent. Why do actors and sports players have to be politically correct? So what if players get caught in a nude bar having a meeting. They are freaking normal guys wanting to have fun. SO WHAT? Why do people always have to be perfect and not express what they really feel? America has been tainted with politcally correct idiots that think they are better than everyone else.

Tom Cruise may be a lot of things, including bat-****-crazy. But there is no way he actually thinks what he does is as tough, or important as fighting in Afghanistan. Sorry, this was taken completely out of context.

It takes some nerve to even think PRETENDING to be in danger is ANYTHING compared to what our men and women in the military go threw in these Countrys !

Metta Worldhate

Whatever. I bet actors do train harder than soldiers. I'm sure being an actor in no way compares to what soldiers go thru in their actual profession, however actors and generally in better shape and more ripped. Hate all you want, they do train harder.
