Original 'Sound of Music' Actress

Live Special Was 'Painful to Watch'

12/6/2013 7:57 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Gretl Von Trapp from the original "The Sound of Music" movie was left "mystified and disappointed" after last night's live remake on NBC ... and says Carrie Underwood TOTALLY BOMBED!!

Gretl a.k.a. Kym Karath met up with former co-star Charmian Carr (Liesl Von Trapp) to watch the special last night ... but their excitement deflated once "Sound" started.

During the special Kym tweeted, "Mystified & disappointed so far by SOM special. So far only happy with Stephen Moyer" ... then followed up by saying, "Must admit some scenes are actually painful to watch."

That's when Karath kicked things up a notch by roasting Underwood's performance adding, "Love Carrie Underwood but this role is just not right for her. She is lovely her voice is beautiful but acting is wrong."

For what it's worth ... the special brought in HUGE ratings for NBC with 18.5 million viewers.

I hail from Carrie's home state of Oklahoma and am a huge fan of her music. I thought her singing was absolutely lovely, but I agree that her acting seemed quite wooden and stiff. She is a fabulous singer, but not really an actress. I have to give her a whole lot of credit for trying, though. I know I certainly couldn't memorize nearly three hours' worth of script, musical numbers and stage directions and perform on live TV. I think another one of our Oklahoma-born talents, Kristin Chenoweth, might have been a better choice for the part of Maria since she has a background in musical theater/Broadway, but I imagine NBC chose Carrie because she is a bigger ratings draw, especially with younger viewers.

I don't think Ms. Karath and Ms. Carr are "hags," "jealous," "bitter" or any of those other harsh words a lot of folks on here are using. Good grief! Can people not disagree with Ms. Karath and Ms. Carr's opinions without resorting to such nastiness? How about disagreeing like an adult and saying why you thought Carrie did well and leave it at that?

The only people who liked the program are "AVID" Carrie Underwood fans who believe she can do no wrong. As far as I'm concerned, her singing was OK but the production was like something that I would expect to see from a high school theater production. The sets were terrible.
The best parts of the production were the excellent voices of the nuns.
